The Orava River flows through Dolný Kubín, dividing the town into two parts. Dolný Kubín lies in the southwestern part of the Orava Highlands, on the border with the Orava Magura. The town’s distinctive features include its medieval history, literature and art, as well as opportunities for outdoor activities around Kuzmínovo.
Medieval Town History and Collections
Hviezdoslav Square is Dolný Kubín’s most important medieval urban monument. Renaissance and Baroque burgher houses line the square. The Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria is considered the town’s oldest cultural and historical monument. It reflects several periods: the tower dates from the 14th century, the Late Gothic altar from the early 16th century, and the Renaissance epitaph of the Zmeškalovci family from 1622.
The Župný dom also brings together architectural history and contemporary cultural use. The building dates from the last third of the 17th century and houses the Orava Gallery. Its permanent exhibitions include 20th-century Slovak visual art, works by Orava woodcarver Štefan Siváň, and a selection of traditional folk art.
Literature, Competition and Remembrance
The Hviezdoslav Museum is considered Slovakia’s oldest literary museum. It presents the life and work of Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, as well as the book collections of Vavrinec Čaplovič. The public exhibition of the Čaplovič Library introduces the scholar and private book collector, along with the fields of knowledge represented in his historic collection. It includes manuscripts, incunabula dating from before 1500, and valuable art and map collections.
Hviezdoslavov Kubín is a nationwide competition and showcase for the artistic recitation of poetry and prose. It also includes recitation groups and poetry theatre for children, young people and adults. The tradition dates back to 1954. The 72nd edition took place in Dolný Kubín from 16 to 20 June 2026.
The T. H. Florin memorial room in the Florin House has been open to the public since 1997. It contains the original furnishings, collections of poetry, personal belongings and biographical information. The house is also currently used for temporary exhibitions in the social sciences and natural history, prepared by the P. O. Hviezdoslav Orava Museum; exhibition content may change. The Dolný Kubín Jewish Cemetery is close to the historic centre. It preserves original gravestones, the oldest of which dates from 1857. The cemetery is open to the public on request.
Educational Trail and Activities Around Kuzmínovo
The Kuzmínovo educational trail starts at the Jewish Cemetery, follows the access road to the Kuzmínovo hut, and then continues to two shelters beside the cross-country ski trails. Eight information boards cover Dolný Kubín, the Kuzmínovo area and its animals, medicinal plants and mushrooms. There are also two interactive boards for children. The trail combines information about the surroundings with specific topics to discover along the way.
The Kuzmínovo leisure centre has illuminated cross-country and downhill ski trails. It is located 400 metres from Dolný Kubín’s historic square. The municipal cycling network also includes the 43-kilometre Pod Kuzmínovom–Medzihradné route.
