Vyšný Kubín lies on the northwestern slope of the Chočské vrchy. Its attractions range from rock formations and viewpoints to religious and literary memorial sites, exhibitions and archaeological displays. If you would like to shape your stay around a particular focus, you can weigh these different perspectives against one another: the landscape, connections to P. O. Hviezdoslav and Margita Figuli, or the history of buildings and settlements.

Rock Landscapes and Archaeological Traces

The protected site of Ostrá skala and Tupá skala encompasses striking rock formations and several smaller caves. Both are also archaeological sites, with remains of fortified hillforts. From Tupá skala, the view stretches across almost all of the lower Orava region. Thus, landscape features and archaeological significance meet at the same named locations, while the viewpoint offers a distinct panorama of the region.

Church and Literary Memorial Sites

The Roman Catholic Church of the Most Holy Trinity is a single-nave religious building on late Gothic foundations dating from the 15th century. The main altar features a statue of the Most Holy Trinity, also dating from the 15th century. The term “single-nave” describes the building’s layout; the foundations offer a clue to its history, while the statue is a specific work of its furnishings.

The literary memorial sites refer to different connections. A monument in the centre of the village marks the location where P. O. Hviezdoslav’s birthplace once stood. The “Priadka” monument is dedicated to his mother. A commemorative plaque bearing the inscription “House of Youth of Margita Figuli” marks the house where the writer spent part of her life. These references represent a former building site, a dedication and a biographical connection—distinct forms of commemoration, not interchangeable ones.

Exhibitions and Guided Tours

Arpádovský Manor houses a permanent exhibition on local history, P. O. Hviezdoslav and other figures connected with Vyšný Kubín. Thus, in addition to local history, the exhibition covers several biographical connections. Check the manor’s visiting arrangements locally in advance.

Mokrý kút Archaeological Park displays reconstructed archaeological architecture and settlement structures, as well as replicas of archaeological objects from specific periods of the archaeological cultures represented in the region. It can be visited year-round by prior telephone arrangement; arrange your visit by phone before travelling. The rocks show the remains of hillforts; the archaeological park, by contrast, features reconstructed settlement structures.

A tour of Kaštieľ Kubínyi includes both the Renaissance and Baroque sections. Weather permitting, it also includes a walk through the English park. The tour therefore combines the two architectural sections with an outdoor addition that depends on the weather.
