Skiing, hiking, cycling and culture give Oščadnica a range of travel options. Snowparadise connects the Dedovka, Marguška and Lalíky areas and has 14 kilometres of ski slopes. There is also a regional gallery focusing on modern art, a cultural monument and a pilgrimage whose date is based on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. You can therefore plan your stay around your interests first.
Winter Sports and Trails
Snowparadise Veľká Rača Oščadnica connects the Dedovka, Marguška and Lalíky areas and has 14 km of ski slopes. Winter sports on offer include skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and ski touring. These four activities show the range of options; the 14 kilometres refer to the ski slopes.
For hikers, the route from Oščadnica-Dedovka via Veľká Rača is one specific option: it is 7.2 km long, has an elevation gain of 594 m and is rated moderate. Its length, elevation gain and difficulty rating help you assess the hike. Veľká Rača is also the highest peak in the Kysuce region and part of a National Nature Reserve.
Cycling routes differ in whether they are regional or local. The main cycling route in Kysuce runs through Čadca, Skalité, Oščadnica, Krásno nad Kysucou, Stará Bystrica and Vychylovka. It is 60 km long and described as a moderately difficult cycling tour. Local cycling route 2429, by contrast, connects the centre of Oščadnica with the Kaštieľ. These different route lengths and geographical references can help with planning.
Another activity is the alpine coaster in Dedovka. It starts next to the upper cable car station and ends at the same point. Its top speed is up to 40 km/h. The start and finish are therefore close together; the route does not end at a different location.
Culture, Art and History
The Kysuce pilgrimage to the Calvary in Oščadnica is a tradition that has existed for several decades. It takes place on the Sunday after the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on 15 August. This gives the pilgrimage a clear place in the calendar and can be taken into account when planning around cultural interests.
The Kaštieľ in Oščadnica and its adjoining forest park were declared a National Cultural Monument of the Slovak Republic in 1973. Local cycling route 2429 also connects to this named site. The town's offerings therefore bring together a cultural monument and a cycling route, without implying a set itinerary.
The Kysucká galéria is a regional gallery focusing on modern art and currently manages more than 3,000 works of art. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary offers a different historical connection: its first recorded mention dates to 1804. The gallery, its collection and the early mention of the church thus represent different cultural and historical topics.
The “Po stopách zbojníkov v pohraničí” educational trail explores the theme of robbers and bandits at themed stops. In Oščadnica, it has five information panels. The trail complements the history of art and architecture with a subject of its own, offering another starting point for planning a trip.
Tailor Your Stay to Your Interests
The offerings vary in activity and scope: winter sports, a moderate hike, a 60 km cycling route and cultural attractions appeal to different interests. The hiking route and cycling tour can be assessed by distance, elevation gain or difficulty, without treating them as equivalent routes. You can then choose activities to match your interests.
