Stará Bystrica combines an exceptionally place-specific Orloj with churches and memorial sites. For outdoor activities, options range from the roughly one-hour walk to the Bobovec lookout tower to the cross-border Beskydská zelená cesta educational trail. This lets you choose between a cultural focus and a longer hike or bike ride during your stay.

An Orloj with a special connection to its location

The Slovenský orloj is the first and only Orloj in Slovakia. Its astronomical data are specifically tailored to the geographic location of Stará Bystrica. Of all the Orlojs in existence worldwide, it is the only one to show so-called true solar time. This means that the focus is not just on the clock itself, but also on its connection to this particular place.

Visitors can view the mechanisms and astrolabe up close in the machinery room. As access arrangements may change, it is worth checking them before your visit. You can also combine a visit to the Orloj with a stop at the reconstructed town square: for cyclists, it is a possible detour on the Cyklotrasa hrebeňom Kysúc.

Church, craftsmanship and Jewish heritage

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel was built in 1892 in the Neo-Gothic style and is one of the most important landmarks of the municipality and parish. A stone cross stands by the church, made in 1834 by master craftsman Jozef Kuric, who was born in Stará Bystrica. It is considered an authentic testament to regional history and still stands in its original location. One notable detail is the halo behind Christ’s head: it is made of 23.5-carat gold leaf.

The Jewish cemetery was established by the Jewish community in the 18th century. A symbolic memorial lists the names of the deceased on one side and the names of Stará Bystrica’s deported Jewish residents on the other. The restoration focused on preserving the surviving gravestones, retaining their original orientation. The cemetery and memorial commemorate different aspects of Jewish life and the history of persecution in the municipality.

The roadside chapel in Lány also offers its own architectural and art-historical point of interest: it was built in the late 18th century in the Baroque-Classicist style and extensively reconstructed in 1822. Its furnishings include folk wood carvings from the early 19th century, including depictions of Ecce Homo and the Pietà. Together with the Neo-Gothic church and the older stone cross, it shows the varied designs and dates of the area’s sacred landmarks.

Celebrations with a wider reach

The traditional celebrations of Sovereignty Day have been associated with Stará Bystrica and the Kysuce region for years. What began as a local event developed into a nationwide occasion. If you plan to travel specifically for it, check the dates and programme for the year in question, as the annual event may vary.

Hiking: from Bobovec to the Beskydská zelená cesta

A shorter hiking option leads from the Slovenský orloj at Rínku sv. Michala to the lookout tower on Bobovec. The yellow-marked trail is considered easy, is 2 km long and takes approximately one hour to walk. The 16 m-high tower has stood on the cadastral boundary between Stará Bystrica and Radôstka since 2011. From the top, views extend to the Malá Fatra, Martinské Hole, Veľká Rača and Lysá Hora in the Czech Republic.

The Beskydská zelená cesta takes considerably longer: the 32.6 km cross-border educational trail has 30 stations and is listed as taking 16 hours on foot. It starts in the Slezákovci settlement in the municipality of Stará Bystrica and can be completed independently. The route is classified for pedestrians and cyclists and can be used in both summer and winter. There are two rest areas in Stará Bystrica along the Kysucká cyklomagistrála on this route. The difference in travel time helps with planning: the trail to Bobovec is a short hiking option, while the educational trail requires considerably more time.

Cycling routes and a connection to the centre

A short connecting route leads from the square in Stará Bystrica through the municipality and ends at a cycle path; it links the centre with the Kysucká cyklomagistrála. The Cyklotrasa hrebeňom Kysúc cycling route follows this cycle highway towards Stará Bystrica. A stop at the Slovenský orloj and the reconstructed town square is an optional detour. The route through the municipality and the detour to the attraction are two different options that can be chosen depending on your ride. As route conditions may change, check the route before setting off.
