Makov cannot be reduced to a single outdoor activity: the destination combines hilly to mountainous terrain with hiking and mountain biking trails, a protected landscape and cultural history. When planning your trip, consider whether you want to focus on nature, specific routes or historical sites.

Landscape and Nature in Makov

Nature is experienced on two scales here. Makov is hilly to mountainous, and VeÄľkĂ˝ JavornĂk is the highest point at 1,070 m. Because of its well-preserved natural woodland and landscape and scenic values, Makov is part of the Kysuce Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Kysuce). Another natural landmark is the field elm U Papaji, considered the oldest and most impressive field elm in Central Europe and nearly 500 years old. The protected landscape area describes the wider setting, while U Papaji is a specific natural landmark.

Hiking and Cycling

The 3 km nature trail in Makov is an easy hike, although it includes a steeper climb and a total ascent of 194 m. Consider the distance, gradient and total ascent together; describing the trail as easy alone does not convey its full character. Trail conditions and signage can change, so check both before setting out.

The green Makov Centrum–Bumbálka route is designated for mountain bikes, is 9 km long and has an elevation difference of 450 m. The distances are directly comparable: the mountain bike route is three times as long as the nature trail. The elevation figures, however, refer to two different measures: a 450 m elevation difference and a 194 m total ascent. Keep these distinctions in mind when choosing your route.

Another route in the Javorníky Mountains is the 12 km border-ridge trail, “Beskydsko-javornícka magistrála.” Track grooming can vary; check current conditions before planning your trip.

Winter Activities and Cultural History

Ski Makov adds five easy to intermediate downhill runs to the range of routes. They are located at elevations of 660 to 948 m and have a combined length of 6,000 m. Facilities include ski rental, ski servicing, a ski school and a ski kindergarten for beginners. These services are seasonal and may change; check the conditions for your travel dates.

The Neoclassical Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (“Kostol sv. Petra a Pavla”) was built in 1803. The “PORAZISKO” information board in Makov covers local history in connection with the largest anti-Habsburg uprising in the former Kingdom of Hungary and the burial of fallen Kuruc soldiers at this site. This offers two distinct cultural points of interest: Neoclassical architecture at the church and a local historical interpretation at the board. Check the condition of the information board on site.

Practical Planning

If Melocík is part of your plans, you can get there by bus from Makov–Ústredie or from Bytča bus station. Bus information may change, so check the connection before travelling.
