On the left bank of the Hron, in the valley of the Štiavnické vrchy, Hronská Breznica lies at an elevation of 275 metres. The village can be explored through two specific themes: its landscape of river, stream and mountain ridges, and a village setting whose traces tell of earlier building methods and ways of working. If you are choosing a place to stay based on its landscape and history, you will find points of interest in both here.

Landscape between the Hron and the mountain ridges

The terrain extends from the Hron Valley at 275 metres to Jaseňový vrch at 765 metres. Stands of alder, willow and poplar grow along the Hron. The Jasenica stream has a natural bed and preserved riverside vegetation. Several species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and waterbirds live in the area. These natural features range from the vegetation along the riverbank to the habitats of various animal groups.

The Štiavnické vrchy were formed by volcanic activity. The rocks in the mountain range include andesitic pyroclastics and other volcanic rocks. This gives the landscape a geological dimension as well as its waterways: its volcanic origins shape the character of the mountain range in which Hronská Breznica lies.

Demian and marked trails

The 678-metre-high Demian above Hronská Breznica can be reached via a green-marked hiking trail. From Demian, there are views of towns and settlements in the Kremnica Mountains, as well as the Hron Valley. Demian Rocks are also home to a natural rock window. The viewpoint and rock formation are distinctive landscape features that may appeal to different interests in a hike.

The Hronská Breznica, otočka, bus stop and Hronská Dúbrava railway station are listed as access points for the nature trail. From there, a 1.2-kilometre yellow-marked hiking trail runs south and east above the Hron. Check the timetable for your chosen travel date before setting out so you can plan your route accordingly.

Village setting and cultural history

Hronská Breznica is laid out as a linear roadside settlement. The early houses were made of wood; later houses were built of clay and stone. This sequence gives the village setting a history of its own. The bell tower was built in 1905. A stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, a folk-art work from the 19th century, also stands on the road towards Banská Štiavnica.

Older finds are also among the traces of the past: a bronze spearhead found on the rocky slope of Bučan is dated to around 700 BC, along with a leaf-shaped spearhead whose findspot is unknown. The two objects therefore share an approximate date, although Bučan is named as the findspot for only one of them.

Earlier work and transport

The residents of Hronská Breznica once made charcoal and supplied it to nearby ironworks. On 10 August 1873, service began on the narrow-gauge railway between Hronská Breznica and Banská Štiavnica stations. Both details point to earlier employment and transport links in the village.

A mine tunnel ran beneath Mertanec and was about 500 metres long. Its entrance was filled in during the construction of Trate mládeže. Along with charcoal production and the historic narrow-gauge railway, this tunnel adds mining and former transport links to the history of the village.
