Lieskovec combines a long history of settlement with the landscape of the Zvolen Basin. Those choosing a destination with cultural history and landscape in mind can explore the area through several themes: archaeological finds, a historic bell tower and the natural environment of the basin. Depending on their interests, visitors can focus on early settlement, architecture or the natural landscape.

Landscape and regional setting

The cadastral area of Lieskovec covers 1,389 ha and extends across the Zvolen Basin. The Poľana volcanic mountains shape the basin’s panorama. The wider area around Lieskovec has numerous valleys and dense forests rich in fauna and flora. Both the basin panorama and the wooded valleys are among the different landscape features that can shape a stay.

Administratively, Lieskovec belongs to the Banskobystrický samosprávny kraj and the Okres Zvolen. It is also part of the Podpoľanie ethnographic region. This distinction separates administrative affiliation from cultural regional designation: kraj and okres refer to administrative levels, while Podpoľanie denotes ethnographic affiliation. The terms therefore represent different perspectives on the place and are not interchangeable.

Hrádok and early settlement

The Hrádok archaeological site is a hillfort. Finds there include pottery from the Baden culture; other finds date from the Eneolithic, Bronze Age and Roman Imperial period through to the Early and High Middle Ages. Together, the archaeological finds at Hrádok show that settlement in the cadastral area of Lieskovec is much older than the written record. The first documented written mention of this cadastral area dates to 1263 and appears in a charter issued by King Béla IV. The finds and the charter thus mark two different historical reference points: archaeological traces go back long before the first written record.

The bell tower as a landmark

The Lieskovec bell tower is the present-day landmark of Lieskovec and dates from 1866. The masonry building, in the Late Classicist style, has a square ground plan. The date provides a specific point of reference following the prehistoric and medieval finds at Hrádok. For those interested in architecture, the details describe different features: Late Classicist refers to the style, masonry to the construction, and square to the ground plan. Archaeological traces of the past thus stand alongside a 19th-century building.

Hiking and natural springs

The Sliač–Lieskovec–Slatinka tourist hiking trail passes through Lieskovec. Those wishing to include hiking in their travel plans can consider this route as a separate focus alongside the local history. The named places give the route a specific context; together with the landscape of the Zvolen Basin, this offers another perspective on the trip, alongside archaeological finds and historic architecture.

There are three mineral springs in the Lieskovec area. Check the condition of each spring before use. Medokýš is located in an acacia grove in the Medokýšne valley. The spring is cold, hypotonic and naturally carbonated, with an elevated silicic acid content. Local residents use it for drinking.
