Krokava lies on the southern slope of Tŕstie in the eastern Slovak Ore Mountains. Within the cadastral area, elevations range from 750 to 1,121 metres above sea level. The village offers a variety of themes to help you plan your trip: wetland and peatland habitats, routes for walkers and cyclists, and houses that offer insights into local folk culture.

Tŕstie: Elevation, Protection and Habitats

The Tŕstie Nature Reserve extends across the cadastral areas of Tisovec, Rimavská Píla and Krokava. It has been protected since 1980 and covers 28.71 hectares. The area is home to rare, biologically diverse wetland and peatland habitats, including habitats for the rare round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia).

The surrounding landscape also has a distinctive feature of vegetation: it is largely deforested. Where forests predominate, they are mostly beech forests. The elevation figures and this description offer different points of reference for understanding Krokava’s location at Tŕstie—from the terrain of the cadastral area to the distribution of forests.

Walking the Nature Trail and the Tŕstie Ridge

Part of the Tŕstie nature trail passes through the nature reserve; the trail is for pedestrians only. The Tŕstie nature trail from Tisovec is six kilometres long and has five information boards about the Tŕstie massif and its natural riches. This makes the route a combination of exercise and information about the landscape and habitats. Along the way, it passes a monument to the botanist Václav Vraný.

The nature trail offers distant views of the Low and High Tatras and Muránska planina. Another hiking route, the Cesta Márie Széchy, follows the Tŕstie ridge and runs between Fiľakovo Castle and Muráň Castle. The two routes have different focuses: the nature trail centres on nature and information boards, while the Cesta Márie Széchy has a different thematic framework, with the two castles as its endpoints.

Cycling Route and Winter Activities

There is also a specific route option for cyclists: the Krokava cycling route climbs through the village to the ski lift at its edge and is rated as moderately difficult. This sets it apart from the nature trail, which is for pedestrians only, in both activity and stated difficulty.

There is also a ski resort in the cadastral area of Krokava. From the top of the ski lift, there is a scenic view of the municipality of Sirk and Mount Železník. This view adds two more named destinations to the landscape perspective on Tŕstie. The description of the ski resort and viewpoint stands on its own; it does not indicate that the ski lift is currently operating.

Houses and Architecture in the Village

Krokava’s picturesque cottages give visitors a sense of elements of local folk culture. Some centuries-old houses offer insights into the village’s history. For those who want to explore the built heritage alongside the natural attractions, they provide a different way to experience Krokava than the nature trail and cycling route.

The bell tower has a striking architectural detail: its ground floor is built of masonry, while the upper floor is clad in wood. The change in building materials can be seen directly in the tower’s structure. Together with the older houses, this building shows how local culture can also be explored through different types of buildings.
