Rimavská Baňa combines an early Gothic church above the village with the SNP – Bojisko nature trail, a circular route that recalls the fighting of late 1944. For views of the landscape, there is also the Vŕšok observation tower north of the village, as well as hiking trails to Sinec and into the Stolické vrchy. Cultural history and a variety of trail destinations give the village its distinctive character.

Church, Murals and the Gothic Route

The early Gothic, single-nave church dating from the 13th century stands above Rimavská Baňa and was built around 1300. It is surrounded by a Renaissance defensive wall. Single-nave describes a church interior with one main nave; the defensive wall is a separate architectural feature.

Rimavská Baňa lies on the themed Gothic Route. It connects medieval churches with rare murals; the Gothic church in the village is among those included. The church interior features 14th-century murals depicting the so-called Legend of Ladislaus. The painted coffered ceiling dates from 1783.

Together with eleven other religious monuments in the Gemer-Malohont region, the church bears the European Heritage Label. It thus represents both local architectural history and the wider regional context of religious monuments.

The SNP – Bojisko Nature Trail

The SNP – Bojisko Rimavská Baňa nature trail is about 4.5 kilometres long. It starts at information board 1 by the SNP monument below the church, follows a circular route through neighbouring Rimavské Zalužany and over the Hrb hill, where information board 5 is located, then returns to Rimavská Baňa.

The trail explains the fighting that took place there in late 1944 between insurgents and German units. The German units advanced from the south in the direction of Rimavská Sobota. The circular route therefore combines a defined trail with a historical theme; unlike the Gothic Route, its focus is on the fighting.

Views and Mountain Trails

The Vŕšok observation tower stands about one kilometre north of Rimavská Baňa. The route to the tower gains about 120 metres in elevation and takes less than 20 minutes. From there, views stretch across the Rimava valley: west to Lehota nad Rimavicou, north to Mount Tŕstie above Tisovec, and south as far as Hungary.

Hiking trails from Rimavská Baňa also lead to Sinec and into the Stolické vrchy. The Vŕšok observation tower offers a specific viewpoint with named directions; Sinec and the Stolické vrchy are other destinations along local trails.

A Recurring Gathering

The gathering of people born in Rimavská Baňa also follows its own rhythm: it takes place every five years. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the date before making your plans.
