Ozdín lies in the valley of a right-bank tributary of the Ipeľ. Specific points of interest for a stay include a hike up Vrch Hrad, the ascent to Ozdín Castle, and local buildings and traditions. Depending on whether you prefer spending time outdoors or exploring local architecture and community history, these themes can shape your trip.

Hiking and landscape

The hiking trail from Ozdín leads up Vrch Hrad (589 m) through a natural environment with diverse plant and animal life. There are also deciduous forests with abundant game in the area around the village. A fire pit is located beside the shelter on the trail to Vrch Hrad. The natural area described extends beyond this hiking trail: the nearby deciduous forests and their wildlife also shape the surroundings.

A separate route description concerns Ozdín Castle: a forest path suitable for walking leads to the castle from the Evangelical church; the ascent takes about 45 minutes. The area around the castle ruins is suitable for hiking and picnics. For planning purposes, it is worth distinguishing between the details: the elevation of Vrch Hrad is given as 589 metres, while the approximate duration of the castle ascent is 45 minutes.

Buildings and village character

The Evangelical church was built in 1813 on the site of a 15th-century Gothic religious building. Its massive tower has a Gothic core. Inside, a Neoclassical altar features a painting of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, created by František Gyurkovits.

A wooden bell tower was built in 1784 as a work of traditional folk craftsmanship. Below the Evangelical church stands a large oak tree, estimated to be 500 years old. A wooden mill is also part of the village’s character: it stands in a stream reinforced with stone in the village centre, near the municipal office. Ozdín thus offers a range of architectural features—from the church with its Gothic core and Neoclassical altar to the wooden craftsmanship of the bell tower and the mill beside the stream.

Traditions throughout the year

Every winter, Ozdín holds feather-plucking gatherings where feather brooms are made. Hot tea with rum and corn served with poppy seeds, nuts or sugar are also offered. Handicrafts and food come together in this winter tradition.

Every year, Ozdín keeps alive the tradition of putting up and then taking down Maypoles. A climb up Vrch Hrad is part of Children’s Day. A bonfire is lit in Ozdín to mark the end of the Second World War. The traditions thus vary according to the season and occasion: the feather-plucking gatherings take place in winter, while the Maypoles are part of the annual customs; the climb is associated with Children’s Day, and the bonfire with commemorating the end of the war. If you are travelling specifically for a particular tradition, check the date in advance.
