Breznička lies at the confluence of the Banský potok and the Ipeľ River. Late Baroque and Late Classicist churches, archaeological finds from various periods and a distinctive river landscape give the town its many facets. There are also cycling connections and specialties from Breznička and the surrounding area.

River Landscape and Nature

The Ipeľ forms a pronounced bend in the river near Breznička. At this bend, the Ipeľ floodplain narrows to 500 metres and takes on a sickle-shaped or sigmoid form. The meadows in the cadastral area of Breznička, adjacent to a preserved meandering stretch of the Ipeľ, are a habitat for the protected snake's head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris). The Ipeľská niva near Breznička is home to Carpathian oak-hornbeam forests, swampy alder forests and vegetation of shallow standing waters.

Individual trees are also described with specific measurements: a protected summer oak near Breznička has a trunk circumference of 379 centimetres and is 16 metres tall.

Churches with Different Building Phases

The Evangelical church in Breznička was built in 1862 in the Late Classicist style. It is a hall church; its tower stands in front of the main façade and dates from 1882. This makes it possible to distinguish the construction date from the tower's date as two separate milestones.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built from 1781 to 1785 in the Late Baroque style and consecrated on 11 September 1785. Its Classicist main altar dates from 1786, and the painting of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary from 1807. Stone statues of Saints Peter and Paul stand beside the church tower. The bells, acquired in 1797 and dedicated to the Most Holy Name of Jesus and Mary, are still preserved in the tower. The construction date, altar, painting and bells bring together several specific dates in the church's history.

Archaeological Traces

The small hillfort site known as Hrádok lies about 1.2 kilometres south of Breznička, on a wooded ridge above the Ipeľ. It has two ditches and an arched rampart. Atypical prehistoric pottery from the Kyjatice culture and finds from the Bronze Age, dating approximately to the 10th–8th centuries BC, were discovered there.

Another archaeological landmark is the Intravilán hillfort on the eastern edge of Breznička. It has an oval layout and a ditch; pottery finds there date from the 12th to the 14th century. The two hillfort sites therefore represent distinctly different archaeological periods.

Cycling, Regional Cuisine and Events

Route 5609 runs from Červeň to Breznička, where it continues above the cemetery along forest and field paths. Route 5609 from Breznička to Kotmanová is a 24.7-kilometre, green-marked MTB route classified as difficult. Its surfaces include asphalt, paved paths, trails, and field and forest paths. A cycling educational trail runs from Lučenec through Poltár and Breznička to Málinec. It covers easy to moderately difficult terrain and connects with marked hiking trails. The difficulty ratings clearly distinguish the two cycling options: difficult for the MTB route and easy to moderate for the cycling educational trail.

Local specialties in Breznička and the surrounding area include Parovec, Nálesník and Fučka. For Parovec, the liquid produced during fermentation is boiled with water, millet and salt. Nálesník is a potato lokša made from dough containing potatoes, similar to the dough used for halušky. Fučka consists of mashed potatoes mixed with flour.

Breznický Majáles is a regular folklore and sports day co-organised by the municipality. It includes raising a Maypole, performances by folklore groups and heligónka players, and sports activities for children, young people and adults. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the specific event date before making plans.
