Horné Strháre brings together two churches from different building periods, a paleontological site and wooded valley slopes. This places cultural history, fossils and hiking side by side as clearly distinct interests. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can use these features to see whether the local attractions suit your stay.

Churches and architectural details

The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a single-nave building in the Baroque-Classical style, dating from the late 18th century. It was remodelled in 1879. Inside, a Baroque painting of the Madonna from the first half of the 18th century has been preserved. The church is in good condition and serves its religious purpose.

The Evangelical church is a simple single-nave building dating from 1791. It was enlarged between 1862 and 1865; the tower, topped with a pyramidal roof, was built during this period. The church contains the altarpiece “Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane” by Ľudovít Ľ. Kubányi.

House No. 134 also features a distinctive architectural detail: its attic boards are decorated with painted tulips and an S-shaped frieze. Here, the focus is on ornamentation, while the churches are defined by their building periods and religious furnishings. The different historical layers make for an informative comparison: the Catholic church brings together a late 18th-century building, an older painting and the 1879 remodelling. By contrast, the Evangelical church is distinguished by its construction in 1791 and its enlargement, including the tower, between 1862 and 1865.

Fossils and sites

About one kilometre west of Horné Strháre is a sand pit that is a paleontological site. A 2020 museum report notes that shark teeth dominated among the fossils at the paleontological sites of Horné Strháre. Visitors can see a local exhibition at the municipal office, where a collection of fossil shark teeth is also on display. The presentation may change, so check the current information before your visit.

Valley, forest and hiking

Horné Strháre lies in the erosion valley of the Stará rieka, also known as Leštinský potok. The steep slopes of the valleys and the small gorges around the village are covered with stands of acacia and oak. There are opportunities for hiking in the surrounding area. A hiking trail from Veľký Krtíš to Horné Strháre is marked in red. As trail markings may change, check the local information before setting out.

Folklore, crafts and local history

The local women’s folklore group “Strháranka” plays a prominent role in the cultural life of Horné Strháre. Historically, fruit growing, viticulture and beekeeping were among the occupations of the residents. Traditional crafts included making items from straw and willow rods. This places contemporary folklore and historical occupations and craft traditions in different periods.
