Čeláre brings together manor house history, church art and traces of historic winemaking. The landscape also offers different perspectives: a canoe route runs along the Ipeľ, while part of Čeláre in the north and northeast lies in a hilly area of Upper Tertiary deposits, with steeper slopes and acacia groves. If you’re looking for a destination with cultural and nature-related attractions, you can choose from specific buildings, a water route and a walking route.
Manor Houses and a Church
The Luisézny manor house in Čeláre was built around 1770 by the noble Prónay family. In Kirť, the surviving part of the local manor house is now designated a protected cultural monument. The accommodation wing of a Baroque chateau has also been preserved there; Count Keglevich used it as a hunting lodge.
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel is a Baroque-Classical church dating from 1797. Its main altar is designed in the Neo-Rococo style and features a central image of St. Michael from the late 18th century. The church building and the altarpiece therefore offer different insights into the sacred art of the area.
Park, Landscape and the Ipeľ
The manor house complex in Kirť includes a large English-style park with numerous interesting trees brought from distant countries. The complex also includes a small zoological garden. Check whether these grounds are accessible before visiting.
To the north and northeast, part of Čeláre lies in a hilly area of Upper Tertiary deposits. Steeper slopes and acacia groves define the terrain there. Canoeing on the Ipeľ, meanwhile, offers views of floodplain forests and meadows; you can also observe waterbirds and fish.
On the Water and on Foot
The canoe route on the Ipeľ runs from the harbour in Bušince to the football pitch in Čeláre. It is 6 km long, takes about two hours and has a difficulty rating of 4. The start and end points, along with the approximate duration, help you plan how much time to allow. Check whether the route is currently in operation before setting out.
A walking route goes over the 281 m-high Hrozný vrch and then descends to Čeláre. The “Popri Ipli” route runs from Bušince via Hrozný vrch, Čeláre and Kirť, with the Keglevich family manor house, to Kováčovce. The two options differ in their character: the canoe trip follows a river route, while “Popri Ipli” takes you on foot through several named places. Check current trail conditions before setting off.
Winemaking History
Alongside agriculture, winemaking was also historically practised in Čeláre. A 19th-century wine cellar adds another local trace to the area’s architectural history and forms part of its past alongside its religious and noble heritage.
