Thermal waters, literary history and a distinctive hilly landscape give Dolná Strehová several clearly defined points of interest. The Imre Madách manor house combines a late 18th-century building with an exhibition about the writer and his work; the Evangelical church adds another historical landmark. Thermal attractions and the view from Strážna hora round out the picture. You can choose what to focus on—culture, water or landscape.

Literature and Architecture at the Manor House

The Imre Madách manor house was built in the late 18th century in the Rococo-Classical style; its exterior and interior are well preserved. An exhibition on literary history about Imre Madách and his work “The Tragedy of Man” is housed in eleven rooms. The building’s architecture and an exploration of a specific literary work come together in one place. Imre Madách’s grave is in the park next to the manor house.

The visitor centre at the manor house includes an educational animator, a small stage and a conference room. Facilities may change, so if a particular offering is important to you, check before your visit. The Slovak National Museum can arrange step-free access to the Imre Madách manor house upon request at the ticket office. Confirm arrangements before you arrive.

Church, Artworks and Cultural Life

The Evangelical church was built in 1652. Loopholes from its defensive wall are still preserved in the side walls. Inside is a carved wooden Renaissance altar with seven biblical oil paintings. The construction date, surviving defensive features and altar offer different perspectives on the same building: its origins, its defensive character and the design of its interior.

The Hraný amatérsky humor (HAH) festival began in 1990, when Czechoslovakia still existed. The festival features theatre, music, cabaret and stand-up performances, as well as competition screenings of amateur films. The 36th edition of HAH began in Dolná Strehová. The programme therefore includes a range of stage forms and amateur film entries.

The Prameň folklore ensemble was founded in 1995. It seeks to preserve and pass on the folklore of the Podpoľanie region, influenced by Novohrad culture. A sporting event is also part of the local events calendar: a football tournament for the Dolná Strehová Mayor’s Cup is held in summer.

Thermal Waters and Landscape

There are thermal mineral springs in the cadastral area of Dolná Strehová. Aquatermal Strehová is open year-round, while the outdoor facilities are seasonal. Kupko Strehová Aquatermal has eight pools with thermal water. Water is supplied from three boreholes and emerges at 36°C. Year-round operation and seasonal outdoor facilities are two separate factors to consider when planning your visit; check current conditions if you have specific plans.

The landscape can also be described in more detail: the cadastral area is hilly, shaped by low, dissected ridges of Upper Tertiary deposits, some of which are tuffitic. Oak and black locust woodland grows on steeper slopes. The 332-metre-high Strážna hora lies on the southern boundary of the cadastral area and offers a good view of the Ipeľ. The low ridges and steeper, wooded slopes give the landscape distinct forms; the view from Strážna hora provides a specific landmark.
