Vieska, a part of the municipality of Ladomerská Vieska, has a distinct cultural and historical focus in the form of the Parish Church of Christ the King. The church has undergone several building phases; the Ladomerská Vieska–Šášov educational trail also includes the church in Vieska. Together, the church building, the settlement’s history and the route to Šášov Castle offer several ways to explore the area’s historical themes.

The church and its building history

The Church of Christ the King is the parish church in the part of the municipality called Vieska. It was probably built as early as the 13th century; a parish and a church are documented in Vieska for the years 1332 to 1337. These details mark different historical reference points: a probable construction date and a documented period for the parish and church. The church was originally dedicated to All Saints.

Part of the tower and the presbytery with a polygonal end have survived from the original Gothic church. The presbytery has a net-vaulted ceiling dated to 1481. The original Gothic church was remodelled in the Gothic style at the end of the 15th century, remodelled again in 1552, and extended with a transept in 1928. On the western interior wall of the Gothic presbytery is a revealed consecration cross, painted as a wall mural in the late 14th century. A late Gothic bell, probably from the first half of the 16th century, has survived from the original church furnishings.

Beneath the church is a crypt containing the tomb of Žigmund Dóczy. Above the portal of the original Gothic presbytery is a circular, wooden, polychrome epitaph dated 1647. It bears the coat of arms of the nobleman Žigmund Dóczy and a Latin inscription running around its edge. The architectural features and memorials therefore belong to different historical periods.

Local history and the educational trail

Vieska is documented in a written record from 1352. Historically, it was a border settlement on the edge of the two historic estates of Beòadický and Šášovský. Trade also forms part of this historical picture: residents of Vieska traded fruit and vegetables in Kremnica. Thus, alongside the church’s building history, the area’s former border location and trade links with Kremnica are also part of its story.

The educational trail passes through Ladomerská Vieska and Šášovské Podhradie and ends at Šášov Castle. Its five stops include the church in Vieska; the route is three kilometres long in total. The trail introduces cultural and historical sights in both municipalities and is suitable for history-focused outdoor learning. Check the local signage and current trail conditions before setting out.

A gentle walk in the area around the host municipality leads to the nearby municipality of Šášovské Podhradie. It is particularly suitable for families with children.

Landscape and transport connections

In the broader municipal area, the host municipality of Ladomerská Vieska lies in the Žiar Basin and extends to the north-western slopes of the Štiavnica Mountains. It is situated at a junction of roads along the main Bratislava–Košice–Trenčín corridor; the main railway line towards Bratislava and Zvolen passes through its cadastral area.

When visiting the parish church, also bear in mind its restoration status: in August 2026, work was under way on the roof, façade and interior. Access may change during the work. Check access arrangements before visiting.
