Sklené Teplice lies in the valley of the Teplá stream, in the northwestern part of the Štiavnické vrchy mountains. The town combines thermal springs and baths with a spa park, historic buildings, and hiking trails. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the options: natural springs and a cave steam bath offer a different experience from a landscaped thermal pool or an excursion to castle ruins.

Thermal Springs and Baths

Sklené Teplice has 14 thermal springs with water temperatures ranging from 28 to 53 °C. Alkaline-gypsum mineral springs and a cave bath were already known in the 16th century. Kúpele Sklené Teplice is one of the oldest spa resorts in Slovakia, making its long bathing tradition an important part of the town’s character.

One distinctive bathing option is Parenica: a naturally formed cave steam bath with hyperthermal water at 42 °C, supplied directly from a thermal spring. Parenica is considered unique in Slovakia and Europe. Kúpeľ Márie Terézie offers a different setting: a thermal pool in an antique style, with a stained-glass section in the roof. The Banský kúpeľ features a replica of Botticelli’s fresco “The Birth of Venus.”

The Termálne kúpalisko Sklené Teplice thermal bathing complex also has a children’s pool at 32 °C. Pool specifications may vary by season; check the details before your trip.

Spa Park, Café, and Peaceful Trails

The spa park stretches along the valley and gradually gives way to a forest park. It offers easy walks in pleasant surroundings, as well as quiet areas with benches and pavilions. A small lake lies behind the Goethe spa house. If you would like to plan another local experience alongside your walk, you can try the healing mineral springs in the park; check in advance whether this is possible during your visit.

Stopping for refreshments is another option during your stay: the Kursalon Café is housed in a historic building and serves coffee, soft drinks, and cakes from its own bakery. The peaceful paths in the spa park and a break at the café can be enjoyed as separate parts of the day, without needing to follow a set itinerary.

Architecture and Local History

The Kursalon was built between 1837 and 1839 as a Neoclassical spa pavilion with a circular floor plan. The Neoclassical Church of St. Luke was built between 1807 and 1811. These two buildings represent different periods in the town’s history: the Kursalon’s pavilion form and circular floor plan define its architectural character, while the church’s construction dates mark an earlier period. Ignác Anton von Born is also connected with the town’s history: he established an amalgamation works in Sklené Teplice.

Hikes and Choosing a Route

The remains of Teplica Castle lie in the hills above Sklené Teplice and date back to the 14th century. A hiking trail starts in the town along a yellow-marked route and then joins the green-marked trail to the ruins. The hike is about 4.7 kilometres long, is described as moderately difficult, and takes approximately two hours. This makes the castle route easy to assess as a distinct hiking option alongside the easy walks in the spa park.

For a longer route, the fifth stage of the Barborská cesta offers a different scale: it connects Sklené Teplice with Banská Štiavnica and is 12.8 kilometres long. These distances help you weigh up the planned route length without treating the castle hike and this stage as the same trail.
