Kremnica combines the history of the town with its minting and mining heritage, as well as routes into the open air. The castle, fortifications and exhibitions offer different ways to explore the past, while routes around historic mining areas and the Calvary add a scenic dimension. The cultural offerings are therefore not limited to a single museum.

Castle, church and historic collections

Kremnica Castle is a national cultural monument. Its buildings date from the 14th and 15th centuries and are protected by a double wall. At its centre stands the Gothic Church of St. Catherine, dedicated to the town’s patron saint and featuring a neo-Gothic interior. The stone fortification wall surrounds the historic centre, connects to the castle grounds’ fortifications and is five to seven metres high in places. The historic walking route leads through the heart of the town centre.

The exhibitions also focus on distinct themes: in the castle’s Small Tower, “Kremnické zvony a zvonolejári” presents Kremnica’s bells and bell founders; audio recordings of local bells complement the exhibition. The castle’s former town hall now houses the “Barokové plastiky” exhibition. An exhibition in the Bürgerhaus features 138 painted shooting targets dating from 1837 to 1896. The collection is considered the third largest of its kind in Slovakia. The Múzeum gýča has more than 4,000 exhibits and offers special guided tours for visitor groups. If you have a particular exhibition in mind, check what is currently on display in advance.

Discover the history of minting and mining

The Kremnica Mint received the right to mint coins in 1328. As a business, it is one of the oldest in the world to have maintained uninterrupted production. The mint exhibition includes a visit to the historic minting workshop. Visitors can mint their own token on a historic coining press, known as a balancier. Check before your visit whether this activity is available.

The Mining Museum in the Andrej adit provides access to part of Kremnica’s underground mine workings. On the guided tour, you pass workplaces from different eras and eventually reach a depiction of the 16th century. Since operating arrangements may change, check the latest access and tour conditions in advance. If you would rather explore the mining history outdoors, “Po stopách baníckej činnosti” is an easy walk through former gold- and silver-mining areas. The route connects nature with Kremnica’s mining history.

Festivals and outdoor routes

The international festival of humour and satire Kremnické Gagy has been held in Kremnica on the last weekend of August since 1981. More than ten stages and platforms in the town centre feature theatre, music, puppetry, visual arts, pantomime, clowning, recitation and street art from Slovakia and many European countries. The programme changes with every edition. The Church of St. Catherine also hosts the annual European organ festival Kremnický hradný organ.

The Calvary comprises 14 Stations of the Cross chapels and the Church of the Holy Cross, set within a ten-hectare landscape complex shaped by architecture and designed for recreation and relaxation. The climb is part of an educational trail that continues to a lookout tower. In favourable weather, the view from there extends to Kremnický Štós, Skalka, Kremnické Bane and Jarabica, as well as Sitno in the Štiavnica Mountains.

Another viewpoint is the castle’s former guard room, which is open to visitors and offers panoramic views of the town and surrounding hills. Access is via a spiral staircase with 127 steps; check before your visit.

Nearby, the Skalka arena offers more than five kilometres of downhill runs and almost 60 kilometres of cross-country ski trails. Operating conditions vary by season. For a culinary treat, visit Atkáryho kremnické krumple, a historic confectionery workshop. You can buy and sample the speciality there, as well as watch it being made. Since opening arrangements may change, check in advance whether it is available.
