Selters, cultural events and memorial sites give Mladenovac several distinct points of interest. The Selters spa is set in wooded surroundings at the foot of Kosmaj, while the cultural centre and a monument are located in the town centre. The area also has archaeological traces and memorial sites from different historical periods. When planning your trip, you can choose whether the landscape and thermal waters, events or history will shape your stay.
Selters, Parkland and Kosmaj
The Selters spa is 1 km from Mladenovac. Today, it extends across around 20 hectares of parkland in wooded surroundings at the foot of Kosmaj, with flower-lined avenues, fountains and promenades. The mineral water “Selters” is used for hydrotherapy, kinesitherapy, inhalation treatments and drinking. The parkland and water give Selters two distinct aspects. In the area around Mladenovac, a recreational hiking trail on Kosmaj leads to the monument to the Second World War fighters. This sets Selters’ parkland and thermal waters apart from a hike to a historical destination. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Culture and Events
The Mladenovac Cultural Centre in the town centre hosts exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, theatre performances, literary programmes, lectures, workshops and discussion events. The centre organises more than 150 programmes each year. The range spans film and theatre to workshops and discussions, offering different cultural options during your stay.
Events outside the cultural centre also have their own character. Every September, a commemorative ceremony is held to mark the anniversary of the dedication of the “Crkvenac” memorial fountain. Since 1996, Mladenovac’s fruit and wine growers have gathered for the Fruit and Wine Growers’ Day to celebrate Saint Trifun. “Street ball” is a traditional event for basketball enthusiasts. If a particular event date matters for your trip, check the current programme.
Memorial Sites and Earlier Periods
In the centre of Mladenovac stands the monument to those who fell in 1912–1918. It commemorates 57 residents of the town who fell in Serbia’s wars of liberation from 1912 to 1918. The Makovica-Varovnice memorial complex is nearby, 10 km away. It commemorates a First World War battlefield and includes stone obelisks and still-visible trenches. The two sites have different associations: the central monument commemorates residents of the town, while the Makovica-Varovnice complex commemorates a battlefield.
The Jablanica archaeological site in Međulužje represents a much earlier period. It is a significant archaeological area dating from the Iron Age and early Roman period. Alongside the memorial sites commemorating the wars of the 20th century, it offers a different perspective on the area’s history. You can organise historical points of interest by period, from early archaeological finds to memorial sites from the more recent past.
Getting There and Getting Around
The Belgrade–Niš–Sofia railway line runs through the municipality of Mladenovac. Mladenovac is also connected to the Belgrade–Niš motorway via the Malo Požarevac exit. These refer to different transport connections: a railway line through the municipality and a named motorway exit.
