Aranđelovac offers several points of interest for a trip: protected parkland, architectural and cultural history, mineral water and prehistoric finds. Marked hiking trails and wine tastings are also among the possible highlights.
Park, Mineral Water and Trails
Bukovičke banje Park covers more than 22 hectares on the edge of the city centre. It is protected as a Category II natural monument and an area of great importance. Mineral waters also shape the character of the place: they are classified as rare cold waters and hypothermal healing waters.
Marked hiking trails start in the park and lead to the summit of Mount Bukulja. If you are planning a hike, check current trail conditions in advance; conditions can change. The recreational area of Bukovička banja has a swimming pool with a whirlpool and underwater massage. Since facilities can change, it is a good idea to check their current status before visiting.
The specialist hospital for rehabilitation “Bukovička banja” combines rehabilitation and treatment with natural healing mineral waters, clay and climate. Alongside the landscape and leisure activities, medical care is also part of the town’s character.
Architectural History and Culture
“Staro zdanje,” the oldest surviving building in the park and a prominent example of Serbian Romantic architecture, stands in the park. Its construction began in 1865 on the orders of Prince Mihailo Obrenović. The building was intended as a summer residence for the Obrenović dynasty. Anyone interested in its architectural history can consider its construction date, intended function and architectural classification together here.
The “Beli Venčac” sculpture symposia are also part of Aranđelovac’s cultural history: during the 52 years of the symposia, more than 200 sculptors from around the world created works in the city. Risovača Cave, by contrast, offers a glimpse into archaeological and palaeontological history. It lies at the entrance to Aranđelovac and is legally protected because of its great importance as a site of prehistoric culture. Visitors to the cave can see reconstructions of a cave bear, a cave lion and a Palaeolithic family.
The archaeological collection of the National Museum of Aranđelovac offers another perspective on prehistory. It includes around 1,000 artefacts from different periods of human civilisation, from prehistory to the early modern period. This means the chronological range of its archaeological exhibits extends far beyond the reconstructions at Risovača.
The history of nearby Orašac is also connected with the region: on 15 February 1804, the uprising that became the First Serbian Uprising was agreed there, and Karađorđe Petrović was proclaimed its supreme leader.
Lake and Wine Tasting
Lake Garaši is 6 km from the city via a paved road and offers good conditions for fishing. The outdoor swimming pool of the SRC “Šumadija,” courts for five-a-side football and beach volleyball, and a restaurant with a veranda are also located by the lake. If these leisure facilities are important to your plans, check their current status before your visit.
At Vinarija Veličković, guided tours of the winery and vineyards, as well as wine tastings, are organised every weekend. Booking is mandatory and must be made at least three days in advance. As arrangements can change, it is advisable to confirm the date and booking beforehand.
