Nine permanent exhibitions covering several areas of the natural sciences and historic buildings with specific construction dates offer two different ways to explore Svilajnac: natural history and architectural history. The known construction periods range from 1826 to 1909. When choosing a destination, you can first consider whether you would rather focus on exhibitions or the history of various buildings.

Architectural history in chronological order

The Church of St. Nicholas (Crkva Svetog Nikole) was built in 1826 and designated an immovable cultural monument in 1969. The two dates mark different milestones: 1826 refers to its construction, while 1969 marks its later designation. The construction period and monument designation of the Old Gymnasium can also be distinguished. The building was constructed between 1875 and 1877 and is designated a cultural monument; the Serbian government’s decision dates to July 17, 2001.

Two other buildings add to the chronological picture. The building of the Resavska Library was built in 1903 as the family home of Dimitrije Mita Isaković. The Old Hospital was built between 1906 and 1909 in the Neoclassical style. There are three years between the building’s construction in 1903 and the start of construction on the hospital in 1906; the church and gymnasium date from much earlier periods. This makes it possible to explore the selection by both date of construction and building type. The Old Hospital also has a specific architectural style to consider alongside its place in the timeline.

The building types also offer different points of interest: the church, gymnasium, family home, and hospital each had a different original function. For a focus on cultural history, you can therefore compare construction dates, building types, and monument designations separately. In the case of the church and the Old Gymnasium, their later designation as cultural monuments adds another dimension to their architectural history.

Natural sciences at the Natural History Center

The Natural History Center “Prirodnjački centar Svilajnac” offers a different thematic focus. It has nine permanent exhibitions covering several areas of the natural sciences. This places exhibitions and architectural history side by side as clearly distinct areas of interest: the center focuses on natural science topics, while the buildings invite you to explore their dates of construction, different functions, and cultural significance. You can weigh up each of these options according to your interests.

The Natural History Center is 7 km from the E75 motorway. This distance can serve as a specific point of reference when planning your journey.

Putting Svilajnac in context as a destination

When choosing a destination, you can first decide which topic you would like to shape your stay more: natural sciences or historic buildings. The permanent exhibitions provide a distinct focus on the natural sciences, while the buildings offer a range of construction periods and types as starting points for exploring cultural history. The designations of the church and the Old Gymnasium add a later heritage-protection perspective.

When choosing a specific hotel, you can compare its location with your own plans. For your journey, the Natural History Center’s distance from the E75 offers an additional geographic point of reference, while the historic buildings provide a different thematic perspective to help guide your choice of destination.
