There are several distinct interests to choose from when planning a trip to Jagodina: museums and architectural history, the zoo, walking trails, and seasonal winter sports. The cultural offerings range from art and collections to a church and a stone bridge with historic character; nature and leisure activities offer a different focus. This lets you plan your stay around the themes that matter to you. Rural tourism in the Jagodina area also offers an accommodation option: rural households provide lodging, tastings of local products, and time in nature. Offerings may vary from one household to another.
Museums: Art, History and Collections
The Jagodina Wax Museum opened on April 28, 2008, as Serbia’s first and only wax museum, and the sixth in Europe. Its 34 exhibits cover topics from history, religion, politics, science, culture, and sport. It also displays original costumes and weapons, copies of rare books, models of monasteries, and war flags. The museum thus brings together a range of subjects and types of exhibits—a distinct focus for anyone interested in presenting culture and history.
The Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art in Jagodina documents the city’s artistic heritage through its permanent and temporary exhibitions. The Jagodina Regional Museum has a different collecting focus: it collects more than 50,000 valuable objects relating to natural history, archaeology, history, ethnology, and art. Together, the museums offer different perspectives on art, society, and the history of Jagodina.
Church, Bridge and Historic Landmarks
The Church of the Holy Archangel Michael, known as Stara Crkva, was commissioned by Prince Miloš Obrenović; construction began in 1818. In central Jagodina there is also an old stone bridge, an interesting example of Ottoman architecture. The two structures offer contrasting points of interest: a church with a precisely dated construction start, and a bridge with Ottoman architectural character.
The Koča Oak is another historic landmark. It is about 300 years old and stands at the place where Captain Koča led soldiers in 1788 to liberate Serbia from the Ottomans. The historic sites to explore therefore extend beyond buildings to include a specific place of historical significance.
Zoo, Walking Trails and Seasonal Activities
Jagodina Zoo was founded on July 9, 2006, and was the first zoo south of Belgrade. It is open every day of the year, from 9 a.m. until nightfall; visitor conditions may nevertheless vary by season. We recommend checking the specific conditions before your visit.
The Kočin Oak complex includes walking trails, a sports field, a children’s playground, and pavilions with terraces. The site therefore offers opportunities for exercise as well as places to relax. The 100-metre-long ski slope provides another seasonal activity. The ski area and sledding area are properly marked and protected; operations and conditions may vary. Check current operating status and conditions before a winter visit.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Stay
Rural households in the Jagodina area offer lodging, tastings of local products, and time in nature. Since offerings may vary by household, check directly in advance which specific options are available. This makes it possible to choose accommodation according to your travel interests without treating different offerings as if they were the same.
