Despotovac brings together medieval cultural history, mining heritage and natural attractions. To get your bearings, it helps to distinguish the town itself from places in the surrounding area: the monument to Stefan Lazarević stands in Despotovac, while Manasija, Resava Cave and Senjski Rudnik each have their own historical or scenic focus. This allows you to plan your stay around the subjects that interest you most.

Mining History and Medieval Culture

In the wider area around Despotovac, Senjski Rudnik was established in 1853. It is Serbia’s oldest still-active brown coal mine and the oldest surviving industrial heritage site. The Mining Museum in Senjski Rudnik is a technical museum devoted to coal mining; alongside its collections, it also presents the social history of the town. Its technical exhibits include steam engines and a lift dating from 1874, both of which are still in operation.

Manasija, also known by the older name Resava, lies on the right bank of the Resava River, not far from Despotovac. A founder’s tomb containing the remains of Despot Stefan Lazarević was discovered in the monastery. The Resava School also flourished there in the first half of the 15th century. It focused on orthography, the copying of manuscripts and translations. In Despotovac itself, a four-metre-high monument to Stefan Lazarević was unveiled in a square.

Another historical connection is the Despot Stefan Lazarević Knights’ Festival. From 2015 onward, the Despot Stefan Lazarević Knights’ Festival was held below the walls of Manasija Monastery. At the festival, representatives of numerous associations from around twenty countries brought the tradition of knighthood to life in an improvised medieval village near the monastery.

Resava Cave and Veliki Buk

Resava Cave lies in the limestone hill of Babina Glava in eastern Serbia; its age is estimated at 80 million years. A well-maintained path leads through all eight chambers on the upper and lower levels. White, yellow and red crystal formations can be seen in the Crystal Hall. The cave’s geological setting and its different chambers are both central to a visit.

The Lisina Waterfall, also known as Veliki Buk, is 25 metres high and lies at the foot of the Beljanica Mountains, within the municipality of Despotovac. Dense forests and the limestone cliffs of the Beljanica Mountains define its surroundings. A report from March 2025 mentioned a wooden platform in front of the waterfall, where visitors waited to take a good photo.

Getting Your Bearings in Town

Maketa Park is at the edge of Despotovac, on the left side of the regional road toward Resava Cave. DespotovaÄŤka Banja, a balneological centre, is on the eastern outskirts of the town. These local points of reference complement the historical and scenic attractions, but should not be confused with destinations farther afield.

If cultural history is your priority, Manasija and Senjski Rudnik offer different perspectives: medieval monastic and manuscript culture on the one hand, and the technical and social history of mining on the other. For scenic experiences, visit the geological formations of Resava Cave and the forested surroundings of Veliki Buk.
