Vranje offers several distinct points of interest for a culture-focused trip: the history of the National Museum, the literary heritage of Bora Stanković, and recurring art and theater events. Hiking is a different focus, on the slopes of Krstilovica and Plačkovica in the Vranje Basin. This places urban history, literature, and landscape alongside one another as separate interests.
Art, Museums, and Urban History
The National Museum in Vranje was founded in 1960 in the old Selamluk, which is part of the Pašini Konaci complex. Its permanent exhibition is housed in the Selamluk and shows an urban home in Vranje from the late 19th and early 20th centuries; it opened to visitors in 2022. The site and exhibition therefore offer a glimpse into urban domestic life during a particular era. The National Museum Gallery has a different focus: it was established in 1995 as an exhibition space for contemporary visual art and thematic exhibitions. Lectures, book presentations, concerts, and literary evenings are also held there. The Vranje Artists’ Biennial has been held since 2007. The permanent exhibition explores a historic urban home, while the gallery and biennial focus on contemporary art and a varied cultural program.
Literature and Remembrance
The house where Borisav Stanković was born dates to around 1850. As a memorial house dedicated to the Serbian writer, it displays objects belonging to him and his family, theater posters, photographs of theater performances, as well as editions of his books and works by Bora Prize winners. Its exhibits connect personal mementos with literature and theater, distinguishing the house from the permanent exhibition on urban domestic life. The event Borina nedelja is also associated with the Bora House: since it was first held in 1967, it has taken place there every year and commemorates the writer’s life and work.
Events and Special Dates
The Borini Theatre Days offer a different focus. They have been held in the last week of October since 1979 and include performances by visiting theater companies, exhibitions, and lectures. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these programs, check the specific event dates in advance. Another custom is associated with Beli Most: on Valentine’s Day, couples draw water from beneath the bridge and splash it on their clothes; many cross the bridge twice. This custom is tied to a specific calendar date, while the Borini Theatre Days take place in the last week of October.
Markovo Kale, Hiking, and Getting There
Markovo Kale is the remnant of a medieval fortress built on ancient foundations. Its construction is traditionally attributed to the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century. The slopes of the Krstilovica and Plačkovica mountains in the Vranje Basin offer a different travel interest and are suitable for hiking. This gives you a choice between a historic site and an outdoor activity, without prescribing a set order.
For long-distance travel planning, the transport connections are also relevant: Vranje lies on Transport Corridor 10, which connects Central Europe with the south. Check current route conditions before setting out.
