Surdulica reveals itself through memorial history, architecture, and its industrial past. A precise historical reference is the memorial ossuary together with the memorial gymnasium: both were solemnly unveiled on 24 August 1924 as a unified monument to the victims of Bulgarian crimes in Surdulica from 1915 to 1918. In the wider area around Surdulica, the protected Vlasina landscape is a distinctive destination for nature and activities.
Memorial Sites and the History of the Town
The Old Town Bazaar is part of the central urban area. The central park complex includes a monument to the fighters who fell in the Second World War. A church dedicated to Saint Panteleimon stands in the old town cemetery. These landmarks serve different purposes: the bazaar belongs to the central urban area, while the park monument and the cemetery church represent distinct commemorative and religious associations.
The cultural and historical heritage also includes the complex comprising the Church of Saint George, the Technical School, and the memorial ossuary. The complex of the “Sanatorium” pulmonary hospital is also part of Surdulica’s historical heritage. Duboka Dolina is described as a place of suffering.
The town’s architectural development can also be placed in its historical context. Until the last quarter of the 19th century, buildings in the traditions of folk, Balkan, and Turkish culture predominated in Surdulica. After that, Western European architectural styles became increasingly common in secular construction.
Industrial History in Belo Polje
Belo Polje was formerly the administrative and industrial center of the molybdenum mine in Mačkatica. Transport links connected the town with the settlement of Mačkatica Rudnik. The remains of the cableway’s rail installations and other industrial buildings form an important part of Surdulica’s industrial heritage. Alongside the memorial sites and the development of architecture, this history gives mining its own place in the area’s historical picture.
Vlasina: Landscape, Trails, and Activities
The Vlasina area, including Lake Vlasina, lies in the wider surroundings of Surdulica and is legally protected as a landscape of exceptional features. One distinctive feature of the lake is its floating peat islands: they form when rising water levels lift peat from the lakebed. The peat layer can be up to one meter thick.
Renewed hiking trails in the area lead to the peaks of ÄŚemernik and Vrtop. A description dated 23 September 2023 reports 47 kilometers of renewed and improved hiking trails in the protected area.
The wider area around Lake Vlasina offers opportunities for bathing, swimming, fishing, and other water sports. At Biljanin Zaliv Bay, you can rent kayaks and pedal boats and moor boats. If you plan to use kayaks or pedal boats, check provider availability before your trip.
A Competition in July
Vlasinski kotlić is an annual fish soup cooking competition held on Vlasina in July and is part of the “Vlasinsko leto” event. If you want to include the competition in your travel plans, check the specific event dates before your trip. Alongside Surdulica’s historical themes, this gives you a choice of distinct highlights: a seasonal culinary event and activities on the lake.
