Gornji Milanovac brings together cultural history, art, memorial sites and sports activities as distinct highlights. Particularly notable are the Museum of the Rudnik-Takovo Region, historic buildings and events. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between sights and time-specific festivals: architecture and museum collections offer fixed points of interest, while you should check specific event dates before travelling.
Culture and Collections
The Museum of the Rudnik-Takovo Region is located at 7 Sinđelićeva Street. The museum’s Brković House is home to the legacy of the Nastasijević brothers and a permanent exhibition on the donations and acquisitions of the Obrenović dynasty. The exhibitions offer different perspectives: the brothers’ legacy is presented alongside a collection history shaped by donations and acquisitions. The house of Ivan Brković, a wealthy urban merchant, was built on the same street in 1938.
Another exhibition is located in the attic of the Yugoslav-Norwegian Friendship House. There, a museum exhibition displays personal belongings of people who were interned in Nazi camps in Norway. It therefore focuses on a different history from the collections in Brković House.
Architecture and Art Venues
The Church of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1862. It is a neoclassical building and is regarded as the purest stylistic monument of its era. For travellers interested in architecture, the church offers a clearly defined style and a specific historical date as a distinct highlight alongside the museum exhibitions.
Historically, the building of the former district administration was the oldest public building in Gornji Milanovac. It housed the Modern Gallery of the Cultural Centre. Thus, a building with significance for the city’s history and an art venue come together in one place. If you want to visit the gallery, check the current visitor information in advance.
Events and Their History
The International Miniature Art Biennial took on an international character from its fourth exhibition in 1996. The Cultural Centre of Gornji Milanovac has organised the biennial since 1998. The years refer to different milestones: 1996 marks the exhibition’s international character, while 1998 marks the Cultural Centre’s role as organiser.
The Serbia World Music Festival has been held in Gornji Milanovac since 2009. The “Školska scena” festival has been organised in collaboration with the Milanovac Amateur Theatre since 2008. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the specific dates in advance.
Sports and Memorial Sites
The Gornji Milanovac municipal swimming pool has a main pool measuring 50 × 21 m and a children’s pool measuring 12 × 10 m. A newly built indoor pool at the city’s Sports and Recreation Centre opened on 27 April 2024. The sand volleyball court is next to the municipal swimming pool. Volleyball clubs from Gornji Milanovac and many recreational athletes take part in summer events and sand volleyball competitions there. The seasonal nature of these events distinguishes them from the pools’ permanently specified dimensions.
The Brdo Mira memorial complex includes an ossuary for Red Army soldiers who fell in the battles to liberate Gornji Milanovac. An open-air amphitheatre was also built there.
