Mount Rudnik is the highest mountain in Šumadija. Its dense beech, maple and oak forests, clear streams and green clearings sit alongside a layered history: archaeological traces can be found on the mountain, while the town of Rudnik is also shaped by its medieval past. When planning your stay, you can therefore first decide whether trails and scenery or historic sites should play a greater role.

Mountain Scenery and Trails

The town of Rudnik is connected to the other parts of the mountain by a paved road. Numerous trails also connect the town with other parts of Rudnik. These two connections offer an initial guide if you would like to divide your stay between the town and the mountain.

There are several cycling routes on Rudnik. Hiking trails lead to some of the mountain’s highest peaks. These activities offer different focuses: cycling routes for a bike ride, and peak trails for a hike. Visitors to Rudnik can also see old mine tunnels. So, along with forests, streams and clearings, traces of mining are also part of the picture if you are interested in the mountain’s landscape.

The highest mountain in Šumadija is therefore more than just a geographical landmark. When choosing between hiking, cycling and cultural and historical sightseeing, it is useful to distinguish between the town of Rudnik and the mountain: the town is connected to other parts of the mountain, while the hiking trails lead to some of its highest peaks.

History and Archaeological Traces

The remains of the Roman temple TERA MATRIS are located on Rudnik. The story of a mint dates back to the Middle Ages: during the reign of King Dragutin, there was a mint in medieval Rudnik. The dinar minted there under King Dragutin was the first Serbian dinar with a Cyrillic inscription. In 2015, a seal stamp belonging to Prince Lazar was also found during archaeological investigations of the medieval town of Rudnik.

Other traces point to different periods in history. Rudnik became the first liberated territory during the First Serbian Uprising. Gradovi are the remains of a Turkish settlement and fortress on Rudnik. The Church of St. George is also one of the mountain’s historic landmarks: it was the first church built there after 1453; the present-day church was consecrated in 2006. Taken together, these themes span Roman remains, medieval coin minting and church construction, and the history of the uprising.

Ostrvica: Natural Monument and Fortified Town

Ostrvica is a steep volcanic peak 758 metres high. The remains of a fortified town, believed to date back to antiquity, are located at its summit. Ostrvica was declared a natural monument in late May 2009. Its landform, elevation and archaeological remains give this place a distinct character: in addition to nature, the history of the fortified town is also of interest here.

Tailor Your Stay to Your Interests

If you are looking for a hotel in Rudnik, choosing a focus can help with your planning: would you mainly like to explore the trails on the mountain, focus on historic traces, or combine both? The paved road connection and the network of trails between the town and the other parts of the mountain offer different points of reference. For nature lovers, the cycling routes, hiking trails to high peaks, and scenery of forests, streams and clearings take centre stage. Those particularly interested in history will find Roman and medieval connections on Rudnik, as well as reminders of the First Serbian Uprising. Ostrvica adds another dimension with its steep form and the remains of the fortified town at its summit.
