Čačak offers several distinct highlights for a stay: museum exhibitions in historic buildings, memorial sites and summer activities at the city beach. Those wishing to include nature can find marked hiking trails to monasteries and viewpoints in the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge. The gorge lies partly within the territory of the city of Čačak; city visits and trails in the protected landscape are different experiences to consider when planning your trip.
Museums and Galleries in Historic Spaces
The permanent exhibition of the National Museum of Čačak is housed in the Master Jovan Konak, built in 1835. It covers three themes: the Čačak region from prehistoric times to the end of the Middle Ages; the monasteries and churches of Ovčar-Kablar and the Čačak region; and the region during the uprisings and wars of 1804 to 1941. The exhibition thus spans early regional history and a later historical period, with religious buildings and political conflicts as distinct themes.
The Risim Gallery holds a memorial exhibition twice a year, featuring 23 paintings by Risim from 1952 to 1983. One admission ticket allows visitors to see both exhibition areas: the area of the “Nadežda Petrović” Gallery at 6 Cara Dušana Street and the area of the Risim Gallery at 11 Gospodar Jovanova Street. Exhibition and ticket arrangements may change, so check the latest visitor information in advance.
The Intermunicipal Historical Archive is housed in the former Čačak District Administration building, built between 1875 and 1877. The building has been designated a cultural asset of great importance. Subject to the stated restrictions, the archival collections are open to the public in the reading room; check the reading room rules before your visit, as access rules may change. The Photography Salon, which organizes solo and group photography exhibitions, is located in the entrance area of the archive.
City Architecture and Remembrance
Čačak is known for well-preserved, architecturally harmonious urban districts that combine traditional building techniques with elements of modern architecture. The Cultural Centre in the city centre is a venue for cultural events. It is housed in a building with an area of approximately 4,000 m².
The Roman Baths in the centre of Čačak date back to late antiquity and were declared a cultural monument in 1970. The Ossuary Monument of the Four Religions commemorates a different historical period: it was built and consecrated in 1934 and holds the remains of 918 soldiers, including 652 Serbian fighters.
The memorial site on Ljubić Hill is dedicated to the fighters and events of the Serbian wars of liberation in the 19th and 20th centuries. The oldest monument in the complex commemorates the 1815 Battle of Ljubić and the actions of Tanasko Rajić; it was partly built in 1938. Alongside the late-antique baths and the exhibitions, this memorial offers another way to explore the history of the city and region.
City Beach, Gorge and Events
Čačak lies between the Jelica Mountains to the south, Ovčar and Kablar to the west, and Vujan to the north. The Ovčar-Kablar Gorge protected landscape of special importance lies partly within the territory of the city. Nineteen wild orchid species are known to grow in the gorge. Marked hiking trails lead to monasteries and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding nature, wooded mountain ranges and the West Morava River. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.
The city beach on the West Morava River is a place to relax and also hosts entertainment and sporting events. In summer, the Sports Centre organizes activities at the city beach and swimming pools; the seasonal programme may change. A stay featuring museums and memorial sites can therefore also include riverside relaxation and seasonal activities.
For planning a trip around event dates, the poetry event “Dis' Spring” offers a seasonal reference: it has been held without interruption since 1964, running every year from 10 March, Dis’s birthday, until the end of May in Čačak and the surrounding area. Exact dates for future editions may vary; check the dates before travelling. The event also fosters the creativity of young authors. DUK is an international youth festival combining extreme sports, mural painting, hip-hop culture and music; here too, check the dates for the relevant edition.
