In the centre of Sijarinska Banja, the geyser's column of water reaches a height of eight metres. Thermal springs, the history of the spa town and two summer events give a stay different points of focus. You can also plan your journey in practical terms: a road from Leskovac runs through the Jablanica Valley.
Thermal Springs and Pool Facilities
The mineral springs have different chemical compositions, including alkaline, acidic and iron-rich waters. Their temperatures range from 68 to 76 °C. The medicinal waters are used for bathing, drinking and inhalation. The spa town is notable both for its varied water profiles and for the different ways the waters are used.
The rehabilitation and recreation pool complex around the geyser includes a thermal-water pool. There is also a large pool with a whirlpool and water features, as well as children's pools with slides and other attractions for younger visitors. The springs and pool complex illustrate two aspects of the thermal waters: their properties and the specific pool facilities on offer.
History of the Geyser and Spa Town
The first “geyser” was a thermal mineral spring that emerged in October 1954 during drilling work on the left bank of the Banjska reka. The drilling was carried out at an elevation of 470 m and a depth of 9 m; the water temperature was 71 °C. The geyser is considered the last remnant of volcanic activity in this area. Sijarinska Banja has been known as a spa town since Roman times.
Another point of interest in the spa town's history is “Maznićevi konaci”, the oldest surviving single-storey building in the Balkan style in the spa complex. The history of the place thus encompasses both its long tradition as a spa town and specific architectural and geological features.
Landscape Around Sijarinska Banja
Sijarinska Banja lies near the source of the Jablanica, on the forested slopes of Goljak and Radana. Centuries-old oaks, beeches and pines surround the spa town. The named slopes and the river's source place the thermal springs within a clearly defined landscape.
Summer Events
The cultural and entertainment event “Gejzerske noći” has been held every July since 1998. It brings together performing artists, including singers and musicians of newly composed music, as well as artists who help preserve traditional music. The “Zlatni kotlić Gejzera” competition takes place in late August and features sport fishing and a fish-soup cooking contest using cauldrons. The events have different focuses: stage performances take centre stage in July, while fishing and fish soup are the focus in late August.
