Bojnik combines a strong memorial tradition with natural and cultural destinations in the surrounding area. The memorial cemetery, Radan Nature Park, marked hiking trails and local events offer different starting points for planning a trip. Some examples are tied to specific years; if you are travelling for an event, check the dates for your travel year.

Memorial Sites and Remembrance

The memorial to the victims of the Second World War stands in Bojnik’s memorial cemetery, at the site of the tragic events of 17 February 1942. More than 500 residents of Bojnik and the surrounding area were shot during this event. A memorial gathering is held at the cemetery every year, where the “Charter of the Living” is read aloud. If you specifically wish to attend this gathering, check the date for the relevant year in advance.

The cemetery thus brings together a specific historical site and a recurring act of remembrance. The date of the events and the annual gathering are two different points of reference in time: the memorial commemorates 1942, while the gathering takes place every year.

Nature Park, Lake and Distinctive Landforms

In October 2017, Radan Nature Park was designated a protected nature park in the municipality of Bojnik. The nearby Brestovacko Lake is also part of it. The artificial reservoir lies on the Pusta, is 2,800 metres long and is located 12 kilometres from Bojnik.

Other natural features can be found in the surrounding area. In the nearby area of Dobre Vode, Delivode is a bifurcation: there, a stream divides into the Ivanjska and Magaška rivers. Another unusual feature is found in the nearby village of Ivanje. At the phenomenon known as “Uzbrdna nizbrdica,” a sloping road about 300 metres long leads to the foot of a hill. A car rolls back uphill there with its engine switched off.

The brief descriptions clearly distinguish these nature destinations: for Brestovacko Lake, the focus is on the reservoir, its length and location; at Delivode, on the stream’s division; and at Ivanje, on the unusual-looking slope of the road. Visitors who include these places in their stay can consider them as different features of the landscape around Bojnik.

Culture and Trails

The Ethno Museum Milena Stanisavljević is located in a century-old building in the nearby village of Mala Crkvica. It includes a small museum exhibition and an ethnographic room. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours in advance. The Church of Saint Nicholas is also a cultural landmark, known for its architectural value and beauty.

There are two different trail descriptions for hiking. A marked hiking trail leads from the church in Borinac to the summit of Sveti Petar on Radan. In Bojnik, the mountaineering and cycling club “Zmaj sa Radana” organises marked hikes, including the approximately 3.5-kilometre “Health Trail.” The distance is a guide, not an estimate of walking time; check current trail conditions locally.

A cycling route can also be traced as a previous tour: during a recreational bike ride on Vidovdan in 2021, the route ran from the sports hall in Bojnik to the Church of the Holy Archangel Gabriel in Pridvorica. Participants rode through the fields of Bojnik and the village of Pridvorica. This route describes that past tour, not a current event offering.

Festivals with Different Foci

Events in Bojnik have different emphases. Bojničko leto was announced for 2026 as a traditional three-day summer event. The announced programme included the also traditional Šeširijada on the second day. The Flower Festival in Bojnik is a traditional event organised by the tourism organisation and supported by the municipality. At its fifth edition in 2026, six exhibitors presented flowers and gardening products.

Market events are also associated with specific editions. At the 2023 honey market, visitors could sample honey and bee products on display and buy them at producer prices. “Dani meda” was announced as an exhibition and sales event in the school park in the centre of Bojnik for 24 September 2024. These examples differ from the annual memorial gathering: they offer insight into specific event programmes and editions, without in themselves establishing a date in another travel year.
