Brod combines a distinctive riverside setting with road connections that extend beyond the town. Houses, the church and memorial sites offer insights into different chapters of the town’s history. If you are looking for accommodation in Brod, this combination can help you consider the town as a possible base for your trip.
Between the Vlasina and the Mountain Landscape
The centre of Brod lies where the Vlasina Valley widens. The mountain river Vlasina flows through the town between Čemernik—including Dela and Čuka—and Mount Plana. The centre stretches along both banks, which are linked by a bridge. The river is therefore both part of the landscape and a clear landmark in the town centre.
East of Brod, Mount Plana rises to 1,358 metres. Dobropoljska ÄŚuka protects Brod from northerly winds. The town also lies in a longitudinal basin formed by parallel mountain peaks. Together, the valley, basin and named mountain ranges provide different ways to understand the landscape.
Road Connections and Historic Routes
State Road II A 231 forms a transit-tourism corridor connecting Sastav Reka, Brod and Crna Trava, continuing to Lake Vlasina and the Bulgarian border. The town centre is also on the road from Vlasotince via Sastav Reka and Crna Trava to Vlasina. You can use this sequence of towns for orientation when planning your journey; check current road conditions before setting off.
The Constantinople Road is also part of Brod’s history of travel: a branch led towards Crna Trava and Vlasina. This historic route should be distinguished from today’s road network.
Houses, the Church and Memorial Sites
A house belonging to the Nikolić family in the centre of Brod was built in the Art Nouveau style in 1905. Two pre-war houses belonging to the Nikolić family in the centre housed inns and shops. This links the history of the buildings with the former use of the town centre: the Nikolić houses were once used as inns and shops.
The Church of Saint Panteleimon was built in 1925 and restored in 2008. It is one of the religious buildings in the municipality of Crna Trava. The 83 years between construction and restoration mark two distinct stages in the church’s history.
A monument to Nikola Stojka Stamenković (1873–1915), erected in 2017, stands on a plateau above Brod, in front of the church and school. There is also a memorial fountain dedicated to Ljubomir R. Nikolić in the centre. The two memorial sites are therefore in different locations: on the plateau above the village and in the town centre.
