Those wishing to combine hiking and local history in Zuce will find specific points of interest: Avala Trail 3 starts at the “Put za Zuce” bus stop and leads to the Monument to the Unknown Hero on the summit of Avala. The ST403 Avala–Gročka route also passes through Zuce. The landscape around Avala and the town’s history complement these different route connections.

Landscape around Zuce

The area around Zuce is close to the predominantly forested Avala. Oak forests are the most common there, while montane beech forests cover a smaller area. Avala is home to around 600 plant species. A total of 67 bird species are regularly observed there, including 21 protected species.

A historical ethnographic description, reproduced in 2013, depicts long slopes toward Avala, with streams running between them. Another historical ethnographic account, also reproduced in 2013, names Gleđevac, Vranovac, and Konopljište as important streams in Zuce. These local details give the landscape its own distinct character, in addition to Avala’s forest and natural surroundings.

Hiking routes with different points of interest

Avala Trail 3 has specifically named starting and ending points: it begins at the “Put za Zuce” bus stop and ends at the Monument to the Unknown Hero on the summit of Avala, at an altitude of 506 m. The monument is listed as a significant site along the trail. There are three drinking fountains along the route; check whether they are usable before setting out. As trail conditions can change with the seasons, it is also worth checking the route for current updates.

ST403 Avala–Gročka passes through Zuce along local roads and paths, past orchards, fields, and scattered woodland. The route is one stage of section ST4 of the Sultan’s Trail, an international long-distance hiking trail from Vienna to Istanbul. By comparison, Avala Trail 3 has a named endpoint at the summit, while ST403 runs through the local landscape and forms part of a long-distance trail. For this route, too, check trail conditions and local signposting before setting out.

Church, history, and a local product

The Serbian Orthodox Church of the “Hram Nerukotvorenog Lika Gospodnjeg” is located in Zuce and was consecrated on August 11, 2002. An episcopal liturgy was celebrated there on the feast of Ognjena Marija, July 30. An ethnographic account published in 1996 cites an Ottoman census from 1528 as the earliest written mention of Zuce; the place appears in it as “Torkol (Zuce).”

A local product also connects Zuce with its food culture: a 2013 report in the newspaper Politika described young Zučki cheese as the town’s best-known product. One distinctive feature of its preparation is that the cream is not skimmed off. The historical context and description of the cheese add distinctive cultural and local points of interest to trip planning.

Getting there and planning your stay

Bus line 403 stops in Zuce at, among other places, the “Zuce / Centar” and “Zuce / Crkva” stops. Check the current timetable and stop information before departure, as names and service may change. The routes offer a clear choice of focus: Trail 3 leads to the summit of Avala, while ST403 runs through the landscape of Zuce. The church, the town’s historical associations, and its local cheese offer further points of interest during a stay.
