The Royal Trail in Nyanza includes sites associated with Rwanda’s historic royal family; Nyungwe National Park offers a very different perspective on Southern Province. It is located in Rwanda’s Southern and Western provinces and has been recognized as a natural UNESCO World Heritage site. The region thus brings together cultural history and the habitats of a national park as distinct themes to explore.

Nyungwe: Rainforest and Habitats

Nyungwe National Park is predominantly characterized by montane rainforest. The area also includes various vegetation types and habitats, including high-altitude wetlands and savanna grassland. So the landscape is not limited to forest: these other habitats add further ecological dimensions to the dominant rainforest.

Around 300 bird species have been recorded in the park, including 30 species endemic to the Albertine Rift. Waterfalls are also among its distinctive natural features: Ndambarare and Kamiranozu are located in Nyungwe National Park. The bird numbers offer a glimpse of the wildlife, while the two waterfalls add to the landscape.

The habitats describe the park as a landscape, while the bird numbers offer insight into its recorded wildlife. This distinction can help with your trip planning: you can make nature and landscape your focus or take a particular interest in the birdlife.

The park has a Canopy Walkway. A chimpanzee trek offers the opportunity to observe a semi-habituated group. Before your trip, check the Canopy Walkway’s current operating conditions, as well as booking requirements and availability for the trek. In Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park, ten hiking trails start at the Uwinka Visitor Centre and three at Gisakura Campsite; check current access before setting out on a hike.

Royal History on the Royal Trail

The Royal Trail connects Nyanza with sites associated with Rwanda’s historic royal family in the surrounding area. Attractions along the trail include the former Royal Palace and the Kings’ Palace Museum. Despite their similar names, they are two different buildings.

The former Royal Palace was built in 1959 by King Mutara III Rudahigwa and now houses the Home-Grown Solutions Museum. The Kings’ Palace Museum was built in 1932. Comparing the construction dates helps distinguish the two sites; they also mark different chapters in the history of the Royal Trail.

The Royal Trail also includes replicas of an old royal palace, traditional Inyambo cattle, the Mausoleum of the Kings of Rwanda and Christ Church. The church was built in 1935 by Belgian missionaries. The route therefore encompasses more than royal buildings: animal traditions, a mausoleum and church architecture are also among the attractions described.

When planning your stay, you can start by choosing your focus: are you more interested in Nyungwe’s habitats and natural features or in the royal sites along the Royal Trail in Nyanza? This question gives your search for hotels in Southern Province a clear direction without assuming a fixed order for visiting the destinations.
