In the wider region around Rusatira, historical commemoration events and memorial sites offer insight into remembrance of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Specific points of reference include the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) station in Rubona, in Rusatira Sector of Huye District, and the memorial sites in Rubona and Songa, in Huye District. The dates and locations highlight different aspects: a commemoration date, an event at a specific location, and the history of a memorial site. For travelers wishing to learn about this part of the region’s history, distinguishing between an event and a location is a helpful starting point.
Commemorations in April
On 27 April 2021, the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) held a commemoration event at its Rubona station in Rusatira Sector of Huye District to mark the 27th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
On 27 April 2023, the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) held a commemoration event at its headquarters in Huye District to mark the 29th anniversary. Employees of the former institutions ISAR, SSS, LVNR, and CNIA, who were murdered during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, were honored. The evening before, on 26 April, a vigil was held at the Rubona Genocide Memorial on the headquarters grounds. The commemoration event the following day concluded there with a wreath-laying ceremony.
The two events were two years and two anniversaries apart: the 27th anniversary was commemorated in 2021, and the 29th in 2023. These dates describe specific historical occasions, not an ongoing program of events. When planning your trip, it is therefore helpful to distinguish historical commemoration dates from a possible visit.
Rubona and Songa as places of remembrance
Thirteen victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi were buried at the Songa genocide memorial site. They had been recovered from the cells of Gafumba, Kimuna, Mugogwe, and Kimirehe in Huye District. The four cell names specify exactly where the victims had been recovered. At Songa, the focus is on the burial, while Rubona is associated with the vigil and the wreath-laying ceremony.
These different points of reference give regional remembrance a concrete shape: at Rubona, ceremonies on specific anniversaries establish the historical context; at Songa, the focus is on the burial of the 13 victims and the cells named above. A commemoration event and the history of a memorial site can thus be understood as different perspectives on remembrance.
Context for your stay
If you are interested in regional history, you can first decide whether you would like to learn more about the dated commemoration events or the memorial sites. The Rubona events provide a chronological reference and mention a vigil and a wreath-laying ceremony; Songa offers a specific connection to the burial and the four named cells. This distinction helps put the different historical emphases into context without combining them into a single program item.
If you would like to include a visit to one of the memorial sites in your trip, check access arrangements in advance. The events in 2021 and 2023 are historical dates, not a current program. Discover more destinations: Huye.
