A wetland is one of Kigali’s defining natural experiences: Nyandungu Eco-Park is Kigali’s first restored urban wetland and covers 121 hectares. Its diverse flora and fauna give the park a distinctive natural character alongside the city’s cultural and historical themes. You can walk or cycle along the paths; picnics are also an option. If you would like to go birdwatching, you can observe and learn about more than 100 bird species here. The park also has viewpoints, picnic areas, an information centre and a restaurant. Walking the paths, observing nature and taking a picnic break thus offer different ways to experience the same landscape.

Art and Local Life

Art and local life also take different forms in Kigali. Inema Arts Center provides artists in residence with space to develop their creative talents. Kigali Cultural Village offers a different focus: it is a traditional marketplace where local artisans and food vendors display and sell their goods. It also hosts events and workshops, as well as festivals and music. The contrast is useful if you do not want to treat art and culture as a single subject: artistic creation takes centre stage at Inema Arts Center, while crafts, food trading and events come together at Cultural Village.

History and Remembrance

Kigali’s historical sites offer different perspectives. The largest section of Kandt House Museum examines the experiences of people in Rwanda during the colonial period, particularly under German rule from 1884, during the colonial administration and the First World War up to 1916. Richard Kandt’s life and work in Rwanda are also covered. Campaign Against Genocide Museum describes how the RPF/A campaign against the genocide was carried out; it is located in the Parliament building in Kigali. By contrast, Kigali Genocide Memorial is the final resting place of more than 250,000 victims of the genocide against the Tutsi. The three sites represent clearly distinct approaches: colonial experiences and Richard Kandt, the account of the campaign, and remembrance of the victims.

Leisure and Events

Kigali’s leisure and event venues cater to different interests. Kigali Golf Resort and Villas has an 18-hole golf course in the centre of Rwanda’s capital. Fazenda Sengha is an outdoor recreation centre on Mount Kigali in Nyamirambo, Kigali, adding another type of leisure activity to the mix. BK Arena is a multipurpose indoor venue for indoor sporting events, concerts and festivals. If you are planning to visit the arena for a particular concert, festival or sporting event, check the relevant date. Kigali thus offers a range of options: golf, outdoor recreation, or indoor sports and events.

A Natural Contrast in Rwanda

In Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park, the suspended Canopy Walkway offers views over the montane rainforest canopy and starts at Uwinka Visitor Centre. This rainforest experience contrasts with Nyandungu, Kigali’s urban wetland. Check current access before travelling to the walkway.
