More than 100 bird species at Nyandungu Eco-Park and rescued grey crowned cranes at Umusambi Village make nature a prominent theme in Kigali. Other highlights include an area with heavy pedestrian and bicycle traffic, art, historical topics, sports and concerts. When planning your trip, it is worth considering which of these interests appeal to you most.

Nature and Activity

The Kigali Car-Free Zone is a popular area where people get around mainly on foot or by bicycle. Nyandungu Eco-Park has a different focus: it is Kigali’s first restored urban wetland and covers 121 hectares. You can cycle along its scenic trails; hiking the trails is another option. The park is also home to more than 100 bird species that you can observe and learn about. The area brings together wetland landscapes, activity and birdwatching, while the Car-Free Zone is defined primarily by getting around on foot or by bicycle.

Umusambi Village adds another dimension to this nature theme, with a focus on a particular species. The restored wetland is a sanctuary for more than 50 endangered East African grey crowned cranes rescued from the illegal pet trade. By comparison, Nyandungu focuses on observing and learning about a wide variety of bird species, while Umusambi draws attention to one particular endangered species and its rescue. This lets you weigh different nature interests against each other: a diverse birdlife or the conservation story of the grey crowned cranes.

Art and History

The Inema Arts Center exhibits paintings, sculptures and mixed-media works by its artists. The different media give the art focus several forms: painting, sculptural works and pieces that combine different media. This suits a stay where you want to consider visual art as a distinct theme alongside landscape and nature.

The Kandt House Museum organizes its exhibits into three parts. The first covers social, economic and political life in Rwanda before the colonial period. The second explores the experiences of the Rwandan people during the colonial period, as well as Richard Kandt’s life and work in Rwanda. The third part focuses on Kigali’s history before, during and after the colonial period. Together, the sections provide a timeline: from life before the colonial period, through the experiences of that era, to Kigali’s history across all three periods. The museum thus connects Rwanda’s national history with the history of the city.

Sports and Outdoor Leisure

BK Arena is a multipurpose venue that hosts indoor sporting events and concerts. Fazenda Sengha, by contrast, is an outdoor recreation center on the summit of Mount Kigali in Nyamirambo, Kigali. The two venues therefore offer different experiences: the arena is for indoor sports and concerts, while Fazenda Sengha is an outdoor recreation center. When sorting out your travel interests, these distinctions can help you choose between events indoors and outdoor leisure.
