Brezoi lies at the confluence of the Lotru and Olt rivers. When choosing where to stay, the range of marked hiking trails is particularly interesting: alongside routes with stated times and elevation gains, there are trails through different mountain areas, while the Pădurea Călinești–Brezoi rock landscape offers a distinct natural focus. Historic churches, a war memorial and the Open Air Blues Festival add to the picture of the town. You can make nature, cultural heritage or a specific event the focus of your trip.

Hiking trails with different timeframes

Brezoi is a starting point for numerous marked hiking trails that lead through the Lotrului and Căpăţânii mountains and the Cozia Massif. One specifically named route runs from Brezoi via Valea Dăneasa to Poiana Târsa. It is marked with a red dot, gains 940 metres in elevation and takes 3–4 hours. The actual duration may vary depending on conditions and the group’s ability.

Two other hikes are described with timings for the round trip. The marked trail from Brezoi to Vârful Sulița has a red cross marker, takes 5–6 hours and is rated moderate to difficult; seasonal conditions may affect the duration. The trail from Brezoi to Muchia Delușel is marked with a blue triangle. The round trip is stated to take 2–3 hours and is rated moderate; here too, conditions may change the duration. The stated times and difficulty ratings provide a concrete basis for comparing these two hikes.

Another route in Cozia National Park leads from Brezoi via Vârful Ţurţudan and Vârful Poiana Suliţa, through Valea Călineşti and as far as the village of Călineşti. Its sequence of named peaks, a valley and a settlement offers a different kind of orientation from the timings given for the hikes described above.

Rock landscape and protected area

Pădurea Călinești–Brezoi features a ruiniform relief shaped by Brezoi conglomerates. It includes needle-like rocks and towers, as well as rocky gorges, pyramids and haystack-shaped formations. Steep slopes, rock bands, scree slopes and caves also contribute to the described variety of landforms. The ruiniform character is therefore not limited to a single rock shape, but encompasses several different formations.

The area is a national protected area in IUCN Category IV and a mixed nature reserve within the administrative territory of Brezoi in Vâlcea County. The geological description and protected-area status are two distinct aspects of this landscape.

Churches, memorial and railway station history

Dated buildings and memorial sites also contribute to the picture of Brezoi. The old church of Brezoi was built in 1793; the old church of Proieni dates from 1583. The two dates mark different points in history: the church of Proieni is dated considerably earlier than the old church of Brezoi.

The “Eroii de la Olt – 1916” memorial is dedicated to the 153 people from Brezoi, Călinești, Malaia and Voineasa who fell in the First World War. Its foundation stone was laid in 1922. Another dated reference to the town’s history is Gara Lotru, which was built between 1898 and 1901.

Festival and travel information

The Open Air Blues Festival Brezoi is a blues festival held in July, featuring six days and nights of music. The programme and event arrangements may change from one edition to another, so check the dates if the festival is to determine when you travel. The venue is Parcul Central Brezoi, Strada Lotrului Nr. 2, 245500. Arrangements may change for future editions, so it is also advisable to confirm the venue for your planned dates.

The nearest railway station to the festival venue is Lotru station, 3 km away.
