The high hill of Dealul Băneștilor gives Bănești a clear connection to the landscape: the village lies on this hill. The village has a wooden church and a paraklis; a Russian map recorded the settlement in 1853. The landscape, religious architecture and local history offer different ways to explore the destination. A dedicated cultural heritage highlight is the Nicolae Bălcescu Museum Complex in the municipality of Nicolae Bălcescu.

Building History and Collections

In the municipality of Nicolae Bălcescu, the Nicolae Bălcescu Museum Complex is considered a pilgrimage destination for history enthusiasts. The wooden church of Adormirea Maicii Domnului dates from the 18th century and was moved from Gâltofani to the complex in 1973. It should not be confused with the wooden church in the village of Bănești. The complex also includes the Bălceștilor manor house, a historic monument dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, and a historic park. The collections comprise more than 12,500 cultural heritage objects. The collections on display in the manor house convey the atmosphere of the era and offer a picture of the Romanian Revolution of 1848. This gives you two complementary themes to explore: one perspective follows the buildings and their dates, while the other focuses on the collections and their emphasis on 1848.

The Bănești Manor House and Its History

The history of the Bănești manor house takes us back to the revolutionary movement of 1821. At that time, the Otetelișanu family retreated to the manor house at Bănești-Vâlcea, not far from the village of Otetelișu. Insurgents known as Arnăuți attacked the manor house under the command of captains Iova and Ineciu. Petrache Poenaru was born in Bănești on 10 January 1799 and spent his childhood in the manor house. His task there was to warn of attacks by the Arnăuți from the bell tower. On 25 May 1827, he received French patent 3208 for a self-inking pen. The patent adds a specific dimension of technological history to his biography. These dates mark different chapters: 1821 refers to the attack on the manor house, 1827 to Poenaru’s patent; the collections in the museum complex focus on the Revolution of 1848. The map entry from 1853 comes after these historical reference points.

Getting Your Bearings and Travelling There

Two reference points help you get your bearings: the village of Bănești lies on Dealul Băneștilor hill, while the museum complex is above the Valea Topologului valley. At municipal level, the DJ 678A municipal road connects the municipality of Nicolae Bălcescu via Milcoiu and Galicea to the E81 European route. When planning your journey, you can use this connection as a guide at municipal level and plan the specific route based on your starting point.
