In Crișan, a network of waterways meets nature watching and local culture. The Sulina branch runs through the commune from east to west. The routes taken by tourist trails also make Crișan a point of reference: some pass through the village, while others begin or end there. By looking at the different routes, you can use their named canals, lakes, and starting and ending points to find your way.

Waterways and Tourist Routes

On Tourist Route 1, Crișan comes after Mila 23; from there, the route continues to Maliuc and then to Tulcea. Route 2 first follows the Crișan Canal and Caraorman. It then passes through Crișan, follows the Sulina branch and Maliuc, and returns to Tulcea. Route 3 passes through Crișan and then follows the Crișan Canal and Caraorman Canal to Lakes Puiu, Roșu and Roșuleț, as well as to Sulina. The routes therefore differ in the waterways and places they include.

Other routes start directly in Crișan. Tourist Route 6 begins there and follows the Old Danube, Mila 23, the Eracle Canal, Lopatna Gârla and Lopatna Canal to Lake Trei Iezere. Route 7 begins and ends in Crișan; its route follows the Old Danube, Magearu Canal and the Sulina branch. Route 9 also leads from Crișan via Red Lake to Sulina and back to Crișan. This distinguishes the routes that explicitly begin and end in Crișan from the route to Lake Trei Iezere. The extension of Tourist Route 13 ends at the Ecological Information and Documentation Centre in Crișan.

Nature Watching and Getting Around by Water

Birdwatching takes place in Crișan and covers almost all bird species found in the Danube Delta. Sport fishing takes place in designated sport fishing areas. The two activities focus on different interests: birdwatching centers on the Delta’s birds, while sport fishing is limited to specific areas.

The Rowmania Ecotourism Centre in Crișan is located on the Sulina branch and serves as a starting point for Canotca trips. If you are planning such a trip, it is best to check the specific arrangements in advance. The centre thus combines a clearly identified waterfront location with the option of focusing on Canotca outings, without implying any particular itinerary.

Traditions and Crafts in Crișan

The Lipovan folk group “Privighetorile Deltei” sings traditional songs. The Ukrainian group “Rebalka” helps preserve local traditions and customs through traditional dress, music and dance. Both groups give Crișan’s cultural scene a distinctive character; no current performance date is specified.

Crafts are another topic visitors can learn more about in Crișan. They include traditional boatbuilders, known as Marangozi, as well as fishnet weaving. Both examples point to different kinds of work related to boats and fishing. The Festivalul Borșului Pescăresc is also considered a local tradition. The Beliscul de la Crișan monument is located in the village of the same name.

Surroundings and Local Cuisine

The Caraorman Forest is located near Crișan. It occupies the central part of the Caraorman spit on the south side of the Sulina branch and is considered a tourist attraction; it is also designated a natural monument. Its documented stands include oak, ash and poplar trees. Dense undergrowth and climbing plants with a Mediterranean character also shape its distinctive landscape.

Another cultural site nearby is Stipoc Monastery, also known as Schitul Sfântul Atanasie. It lies on the Stipoc spit between the communes of Chilia Veche and Crișan. The monastery includes a small wooden church in the Moldavian style. Crișan itself also has an ARBDD information centre listed as a place of tourist interest.

Traditional fish borscht is part of the local cuisine, and visitors can enjoy it in Crișan. Culinary and cultural themes thus complement the waterways and nature watching, without requiring all activities to form part of a single route.
