Mahmudia lies on the left bank of the Sfântu Gheorghe branch of the Danube. Two themes are relevant when planning a trip: the natural environment and birdlife of the Danube Delta, and the town’s historical and cultural connections. Specific examples range from lakes and a cave to fortress ruins, winter customs and reed crafts.

River landscapes and birdwatching

The many lakes and marshes of the Danube Delta World Heritage Site are home to more than 300 bird species and 45 freshwater fish species. One specific point of interest is Lacul Rotund, one of the bodies of water around Lacul Gorgova. Cormorants, pygmy cormorants, pelicans, herons and birds of prey are among the species found there.

Lacul Cuzmintul Mare is a bird-breeding area and is also covered with water lilies. The two bodies of water offer different natural highlights: Lacul Rotund stands out for the variety of bird groups found there, while Lacul Cuzmintul Mare is notable for its breeding area and aquatic plants. As you explore the landscape, you can focus on specific lakes and different aspects of nature.

Peștera Tunel is another distinctive natural site in the area. This fossil cave has a single gallery measuring 19.20 metres in length. It lies on the right bank of the Sfântu Gheorghe branch, near the landing stage. Its single gallery makes it a natural attraction quite different from the lakes and their birdlife and plant life.

History, traditions and crafts

The ruins of the Roman fortress of Salsovia lie on a promontory along the Sfântu Gheorghe branch. A birdwatching point is located near the ruins. This brings a historical attraction and an opportunity for birdwatching together in one place.

Mahmudia is home to three Old Believer Lipovan churches. Another cultural attraction is the “Salsovia” amateur theatre festival, which is associated with Mahmudia. Together with the fortress ruins, these offer several different ways to explore the town’s history and cultural life.

Mahmudia observes winter customs from Christmas Eve on 24 December to Epiphany on 6 January. These include Colindatul, Plugușorul, Semănatul, Sorcova, Capra and Ursul. The period therefore spans Christmas and New Year through to Epiphany; these customs make the festive season a distinct cultural highlight of the town.

Reed crafts are also part of the local cultural profile. Atelier de papură is said to be the only workshop in the Danube Delta producing reed products with brand value. Its distinctive features include original patterns and bold colours, including blue, a colour also used in traditional Russian architecture. The workshop thus combines a local material with a distinctive design tradition.

Activities and their highlights

A birdwatching trip into the Danube Delta is offered from Mahmudia. Check seasonal availability in advance to make sure the tour suits your travel dates.

Mountain bikes for adults and children are also available to rent in Mahmudia. The bikes are intended for exploring unpaved roads and trails in the surrounding area. Check availability before making plans for this activity, too.

The two activities offer different experiences: the trip focuses on birdwatching in the Danube Delta, while the mountain bike rental lets you explore roads and trails in the surrounding area. Consider whether you would rather include a nature-watching excursion or a cycling exploration in your stay.
