At the edge of the traditional fishing village of Letea, Letea Forest lies on the Letea Sand Ridge. The forest is surrounded by sand dunes. Letea is also one of the villages in the Danube Delta particularly associated with Lipovan houses. The natural landscape and village culture offer two different perspectives on the same place. If you are looking for a destination that combines landscape and history, this contrast is worth considering when making your choice.

Getting to Letea

A gravel road connects Letea to the city of Sulina via C.A. Rosetti. Periprava can be reached by water; from there, the land route passes through the commune of C.A. Rosetti along the local roads DC3–DC4 to Letea. The connections therefore differ in their sequence: on the one hand, the gravel road via C.A. Rosetti; on the other, the water route followed by a land journey. Check road conditions before travelling. For the route via Periprava, water levels and local transport conditions may change. Letea is also connected to the Magearu Canal.

Letea Forest: Nature and Protection

Near Letea lies the protected Letea Forest Nature Park, designated a natural monument. 2,825 hectares of the forest are part of strictly protected zones; the forest has been protected since 1938. The year refers to the history of its protection, not to current visitor regulations. Therefore, check the reserve’s current rules before visiting.

The plant life also shapes the forest: despite the non-Mediterranean climate, climbing plants such as the Greek liana Periploca graeca grow there. In spring, the forest is covered with lilies of the valley (Convallaria majalis); the exact timing can vary from year to year. About 113 bird species are reported for Letea Forest, including 106 protected species. These figures may reflect an earlier compilation.

Around Letea, groups of dozens or hundreds of feral horses roam across the sand ridges. A sighting is not guaranteed. Follow the reserve’s rules when observing nature.

Village History and Lipovan Architecture

Letea was founded in 1709 as the first village in the commune’s territory. Traditional Lipovan houses, such as those found in Letea, were built from natural materials including stone, clay bricks, wood and reeds. In general, the houses were designed as wagon houses with three rooms and a veranda. They were painted white and blue on the outside, and sometimes green as well. These features describe a general style of construction, not necessarily every individual house: some houses may have been altered or fallen into disrepair.

A winter kitchen is considered a distinctive feature of the village of Letea and the communities that developed there. It adds another element of Letea’s characteristic architectural culture to the information about building materials and house design. This means two different points of interest can inform your choice of destination: the forest’s natural landscape and the village’s history, including its traditional homes.
