Sarichioi Commune lies on the shore of Lake Razim. Its waterside landscape and Lipovan cultural heritage give your trip two distinct focuses: you can explore the lagoon landscape, visit a medieval fortress or discover the cultural traditions passed down by the Lipovans. Which of these aspects interests you most can help you choose a suitable holiday rental and plan your days.
Lake Razim and a medieval fortress
Lake Razim forms the eastern boundary of Sarichioi Commune and is part of the Razim-Sinoe lagoon complex. The lake is therefore not only a defining feature of the landscape, but also a focal point for outdoor activities. The medieval Enisala Fortress offers a very different perspective: it was built for military purposes in the second half of the 14th century, most likely by Genoese merchants. Parts of its walls and bastions still stand 5 to 10 metres high. Those interested in history and architecture will find it a tangible counterpoint to the waterside landscape.
The fortress can be reached via the E87 Tulcea–Babadag road, followed by the DJ 223A to Enisala. As road conditions can change, check them before setting out. The “Enisala – Unitate la Cetate” festival is another cultural highlight of the area: in recent years, it has been held in August at the foot of the fortress. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the current dates.
Lipovan culture and the farmstead museum
Lipovan culture in Sarichioi can be explored in various forms. The women’s Lipovan costume preserves the structure of an old Russian costume from the area around Moscow and the middle Volga. Lipovan folklore includes ritual forms associated with calendar customs, important life events and incantations. Lipovans in Sarichioi founded the folklore ensemble “Landâș” (“Lăcrămioara”). Together, these themes reveal different aspects of cultural tradition, from clothing and customs to community folklore.
The farmstead museum in Enisala presents a synthesis of traditional architecture in northern Dobruja from the early 20th century. The complex includes a house with a storeroom, stable, shed and kitchen, as well as a summer kitchen with an oven, a dovecote and a well. The site can thus be viewed as a whole: the residence stands alongside the agricultural and domestic buildings that together make up the farmstead. The museum is undergoing restoration. It was scheduled to close for the work from 27 October 2025; the restoration is part of a project running from 2024 to 2027. Before visiting, check whether the museum is currently open to visitors.
Activities and practical information
Kayak trips of up to 20 kilometres are possible on Lake Razim. The details of your plans will also depend on where launch and rental options are currently available, so ask locally. Birdwatching is offered or practised as a leisure activity in the area of Sarichioi Commune. No specific birdwatching site is indicated, so you do not need to plan these two interests as the same kind of outing: kayak routes are on the lake, while birdwatching is listed as an activity in the area.
Sarichioi’s townscape also includes an old fishing harbour. If you would like to visit, check locally on access and available facilities. Sarichioi’s market takes place on Sundays; confirm that it is currently operating before your trip. This lets you choose between a cultural focus, time by the water and these local points of interest, without relying on unconfirmed opening hours or event dates.
