The archaeological site of Cetatea Halmyris lies 2.5 kilometres east of the village of Murighiol; from Murighiol, boat trips to the Isac, Isacel and Uzlina lake area are also possible. This gives you two distinct focuses to choose from when planning your trip: Roman-Byzantine history and exploring the waterways. If you are looking for a holiday rental, first consider which of these focuses you would like to shape your stay.

Roman and Religious Heritage

Halmyris was the base of military units and a station for the Danube fleet, Classis Flavia Moesica. Military, civilian and religious structures have been excavated there. These include a bishop’s basilica with the crypt of the first martyrs of Dobruja, Epictet and Astion. The site thus brings together evidence of the area’s military history and its early religious history.

The Halmyris Monastery in Murighiol is also associated with Epictet and Astion: their relics were discovered in the summer of 2001. Since 2008, the martyrs’ complete relics have been displayed there for veneration. Together with the fortress, this makes for a distinctive cultural and historical focus encompassing both archaeological structures and religious heritage.

Landscape and Birdlife

The Murighiol area is characterised by hills and valleys and is bordered by the Danube to the east. The protected natural area of Lacul Beibugeac-Plopu lies close to the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. Its fine, invertebrate-rich muddy bottom attracts waders, ducks, shelducks and swans. The birds you can observe may vary depending on the season. The landscape and natural area therefore offer a different focus from Halmyris Fortress: here, habitats and groups of birds take centre stage, while there, it is the excavated structures and their history.

Waterways from Murighiol

Water routes that start and end in Murighiol include Traseul 5, Traseul 6, Traseul 7 and Traseul 8. Traseul 5 follows the Canalul Dranov to Gura Portiţei and returns via the Canalul Dunavăţ. Traseul 6 is a loop via the Canalul Dunavăţ, Canalul Cocoş, Canalul Mustaca, Canalul de Centură and Canalul Dranov. Traseul 7 is a circular water route via Uzlina, Lacul Uzlina, Lacul Isac and Gârla Perivolovca. Traseul D3 is described as a hiking route from Murighiol to Lacul Sărături and back. The options described therefore differ in their destinations and route types, not in any travel or walking time stated here. As boat operators and schedules may change, check current options before your trip.

Customs, Dates and Cuisine

The annual Festivalul Serbarile Apei şi Pescuitului takes place from 15 to 17 September and was established in 2000. Check for the latest edition before your trip. In the village of Murighiol, winter customs are observed from Christmas Eve on 24 December through to Epiphany on 6 January. These include colindatul, pluguşorul, semănatul, sorcova, capra and ursul. The festival and winter customs mark different times of year: the festival takes place in September, while the customs listed span the turn of the year.

Fish preparation methods are also part of the local cuisine: in Murighiol, fish is baked, fried, salted and marinated, served in soups and fish borscht, and prepared as a stew or aspic. You can choose a holiday rental in Comuna Murighiol with the experiences that matter to your trip in mind.
