Cetatea Enisala lies two kilometers outside the village of Enisala, on a limestone hill overlooking Lakes Razim and Babadag. The fortress is therefore a destination in its own right, separate from the village center. The Sarichioi–Enisala–Jurilovca–Babadag tour also passes through Enisala. If you are looking for a holiday rental for your stay, you can first decide whether the fortress will be the main focus or whether Enisala should be included as a stop on a longer route.

Fortress and Landscape

Cetatea Enisala was built for military purposes in the second half of the 14th century. This gives a visit a clear historical focus: the fortress can be understood as a medieval military structure. Its location on a limestone hill overlooking Razim and Babadag also connects it spatially to both lakes. The Enisala Nature Reserve covers 57 hectares and is located within the administrative territory of Comuna Sarichioi. It is another named landscape feature, with its own area and administrative designation.

Getting There and the Tour

Road access to Enisala is via DJ 223A, branching off the E87 between Tulcea and Babadag. For a longer itinerary, consider the Sarichioi–Enisala–Jurilovca–Babadag tour: it passes through Enisala, covers 130 kilometers, and takes approximately eight to nine hours, including sightseeing, breaks, and possibly a lunch break. This time estimate applies to the entire tour, not just a stop in Enisala. If you are choosing between a visit to the village and the full tour, the time required is an important difference: the tour connects several places and therefore requires more planning than a single stop.

Visiting the Village Center and Planning Around Events

The planned tour itinerary includes a visit in the village center to the preserved traditional farmstead of Enisala, a small museum of village life in Dobruja, followed by Cetatea Enisala. The farmstead has been closed for restoration work since October 27, 2025; the restoration project runs from 2024 to 2027. Check the site’s reopening status before visiting. The two stops included in the tour itinerary are not in the same location: the farmstead is in the village center, while the fortress is two kilometers outside Enisala. Keeping this distinction in mind can help you plan the two stops separately when mapping out your route.

In recent years, the “Enisala – Unitate la Cetate” festival has been held in August at the foot of Cetatea Enisala. Tens of thousands of people from Tulcea County and tourists attended. Dates may vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.
