Dealu Frumos combines Saxon architectural heritage with routes that can be travelled on foot or by mountain bike from Agnita. The fortified church, Casa Verde as a typical Saxon farmhouse, and buildings by architect Fritz Balthes offer different perspectives on the village. This gives you two distinct themes to consider when planning: architectural history and active routes connecting the area.

The Fortified Church and Saxon Architectural Heritage

The fortified church dates back to a three-aisled Romanesque basilica from the 13th century. The UAUIM study centre for vernacular architecture is located within the fortified church complex. The complex is also used for academic, professional and cultural events, including international workshops and student camps. The historic origins, study centre and events connect architectural history with an educational and cultural role in Dealu Frumos.

Other buildings also point to different periods in architectural history. The former officers’ casino was built in 1909 to plans by architect Fritz Balthes and stands opposite the main entrance to the fortified Evangelical church complex. The Sala comunității is part of this complex; Balthes designed it between 1913 and 1914. Alongside the basilica’s Romanesque origins, this gives a timeline from the 13th century to the early 20th century.

Casa Verde adds a perspective on rural architecture. It is a typical Saxon farmhouse and preserves the form and style characteristic of Saxon architecture. As a counterpart to the fortified church complex, the farmhouse draws attention to rural building traditions. Those with a particular interest in architecture can see both as distinct expressions of Saxon architectural style.

A 2024 report mentions a restoration exhibition in the old school. Before visiting, check whether the exhibition is currently open to the public.

Routes from Agnita and the Greenway Route

Routes lead from Agnita to Dealu Frumos and can be travelled on foot or by mountain bike. They pass through a Natura 2000 protected area. If you plan to take this route, check local seasonal conditions.

For a broader geographical overview, the second Greenway route in the Hârtibaciu Valley runs from Agnita via Dealu Frumos, Merghindeal, Cincu, Bruiu, Şomartin, Nou Român, Săsăuş, Chirpăr and Marpod to Sibiu. These two pieces of information answer different questions: the routes from Agnita describe the connection to the village and possible ways to travel; the Greenway route places Dealu Frumos within a longer sequence of villages leading to Sibiu.
