There are very different themes to choose from when planning a trip to Sângeorgiu De Mureş: the saline facilities of Băile Sărate, the permanent exhibition at Máriaffi Castle and the annual VIBE Festival. The range of themes therefore extends from salt-bathing facilities and a public collection to a festival on the banks of the Mureș. Practical details and dates also matter when planning: the operating status of individual facilities may change, castle visits can be arranged by phone, and you should check the festival dates separately.
Salt, water and the history of Băile Sărate
Băile Sărate Sângeorgiu de Mureş has concentrated mineral water containing chloride, sodium and iodine, mineral mud, and a gentle bioclimate. These natural features offer a different perspective from the facility’s specific amenities. The offerings include warm-water baths, a sauna, mud packs, massages and physiotherapy equipment. You can sort the options according to your interests: are you mainly interested in the mineral composition and bioclimate, a bath or treatment, or the outdoor areas? Outside, saltwater pools and a landscaped beach complement the offerings. Before travelling, check which facilities are available, as their operating status may change.
The history of Băile Sărate includes two clearly dated events. A saltwater pool was built in 1880. During a search for natural gas in 1912–1913, saltwater emerged from a depth of 864 metres. The two dates refer to different steps: 1880 marks the construction of the pool, while 1912–1913 marks the later emergence of saltwater during drilling. The depth of 864 metres relates to this second event.
Máriaffi Castle and the Csíki Mill
Máriaffi Castle was built in 1870 and houses the permanent exhibition of the public collection of Sângeorgiu De Mureş. The collection gives the public access to culture for educational and recreational purposes. The castle thus brings together two distinct cultural points of interest: the building and its year of construction, and a permanent exhibition. The castle is open to visitors; visits can be arranged by phone at +40 721 233 751. If the exhibition is a fixed part of your itinerary, arrange your visit by phone in advance and check the visitor information.
Another historical thread leads to the Csíki Mill. Its history began in 1912, when Váradi Béla built a peasant mill. Compared with the castle, built in 1870, this gives a chronological contrast: the castle was built earlier, while the mill’s history began 42 years later. The castle’s construction year and the beginning of the mill’s history can therefore be considered as distinct points in time.
Park, festival and getting there
A park is home to two centuries-old oak trees, whose ages were given as 722 and 812 years respectively in 2024. The VIBE Festival offers a different point of reference in time: it brings together more than 50,000 attendees every year on the banks of the Mureș. The oak tree ages refer to a specific year, while the festival takes place annually; still, check the specific event dates separately for your trip.
