Șimian Island lies downstream of the Porțile de Fier I hydroelectric plant, between Romania and Serbia and opposite Șimian. It is visible from the DN6. For orientation, it is useful to distinguish between the town and the island: the Ada-Kaleh complex is on Șimian Island. The town’s landscape is also part of the region’s character. Șimian lies in a predominantly hilly landscape; there are also lowlands towards the Danube, and the floodplains of the Topolnița Valley are part of it as well.

Island history and Ada-Kaleh heritage

Ostrovul Șimian Island was inhabited from the Neolithic period through the feudal era. One historical interpretation also links it to the construction of Trajan’s Bridge: between 103 and 105, the island is said to have served as a natural base for diversion dams used to channel the water. Before the Porțile de Fier reservoir was built, a number of objects and architectural elements from Ada-Kaleh were transferred to Șimian in 1968. These included several stone tombstones and burial chambers, which were used to reconstruct the Turkish cemetery; the relocated objects and architectural elements are still on the island today.

The periods should be kept distinct: the settlement history extends back to the feudal era, its role in the diversion dams remains a historical interpretation, and the transfer from Ada-Kaleh is dated to 1968. This places a possible earlier use alongside a specific later transfer.

Fortress, cemetery and orientation

The Ada-Kaleh architectural complex on the island includes the 18th-century bastion fortress Cetatea bastionară and a Turkish cemetery from the same period. At the reconstructed cemetery, the central avenue is about 50 metres east of the reconstructed Ada-Kaleh Gate. This approximate distance positions two prominent points in the reconstructed ensemble in relation to each other.

Water route and the Danube

A tourist description dated 7 August 2018 states that the open-air museum on the island can only be accessed by water, using nautical transport. Check current boat arrangements before planning a visit. For the Şimian area, the strategic plan also mentions the possibility of organising Danube cruises. If a cruise is important to you, check in advance whether one can be arranged for your travel dates.

Cultural heritage in Cerneți

The heritage of Șimian commune also includes two named fortified houses, or cule, in Cerneți. Cula Tudor Vladimirescu is located there, in Mehedinți County, within Șimian commune, but not in the town of Şimian itself. Cula Nistor is on Dealul Gârdanului in Cerneți, also within Șimian commune. These are distinct cultural landmarks: the Ada-Kaleh complex is on Șimian Island, while the two cule are located in Cerneți.
