The commune of Godeanu lies in the MehedinČi Mountains, on the upper reaches of the TopolniČa River, which locals also call Valea Mare. The TopolniČa is the most important waterway in the commune and the wider MehedinČi Plateau region. Among the communeās most interesting attractions is its karst landscape, with karren, sinkholes, valleys, poljes, gorges and, above all, caves.
Karst, Caves and Trails
The karst landscape takes different forms: underground in caves and above ground in valleys and gorges. One specific example is PeČtera TopolniČei, west of the village of Marga, also known to locals as PeČtera de la Prosac. The cave contains stalactite and stalagmite formations; rare bat species also live there. Stalactites hang from the cave ceiling, while stalagmites grow upward from the floorāthe terms therefore distinguish between two forms of the world of cave formations.
Cheile TopolniČei stretches for approximately four kilometres, and hiking trails run through the gorges. A tourist trail between Godeanu and CireČu leads to Gaura lui CiocĆ¢rdie in about 20 minutes. The distance refers to the gorges, while the time refers to this specific trail. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Wooden Churches and History
The language, traditional dress and customs in Godeanu are identical to those of the Mountain Banat region. A historical trace leads to the wooden church āSf. Voievoziā: it was brought to Godeanu from ObĆ¢rČia CloČani in October 1946. Its original beams and the icons of the iconostasis were preserved when it was moved. An iconostasis is a partition adorned with icons inside a church; the preserved icons therefore belong to a specific, identifiable part of the furnishings.
The wooden church āSfĆ¢ntul Dimitrieā stands in the centre of the village of Godeanu. The wooden house āElena Gruiescuā, dating from 1918, is also in the village. These details offer different ways to explore the cultural heritage: the churchās location is specified within the village, while the house is placed in its historical context by its year of construction.
Cetatea GrÄdeČului fortress dates from the time of the Dacians. It lies on GrÄdeČ Hill, at the confluence of the StilbiČa stream and the TopolniČa, south of PÄuneČti. The fortress is thus associated with both a clearly identified historical period and a precise description of its location.
Chiciora and the Ciumarca
Crucea de la Godeanu is a 35-metre-high landmark on Dealul Chiciora, near Godeanu. Chiciora (Godeanu) peak reaches an elevation of 722.6 metres. Godeanuās annual Ciumarca is also associated with this hill: its procession runs from the foot of Dealul Chiciora to its summit. The feast day was established by Cuviosul Nicodim cel SfinČit de la Tismana. If you are considering the Ciumarca as a possible reason for travelling, check the date for the year in question in advance.
