Dubova combines views of the steep Danube cliffs with hiking trails that start in the village. Cazanele Dunării lies between Dubova and Orșova, where the river narrows dramatically between high cliffs. The different walking times and difficulty levels help you choose the right focus for your hike.
Danube Gorges and Viewpoints
Cazanele Mari is about 4 kilometres long and dominated by the Ciucarul Mare massif. Near Dubova, this mountain lies in Porțile de Fier Nature Park and offers panoramic views of Cazanele Mari and the Danube. Cazanele Mici is flanked by Ciucarul Mic. It lies on the opposite side of Dubova Bay from Ciucarul Mare and offers a view of Cazanele Mici. The hikes therefore focus on two different views of the Danube gorge.
Peștera Ponicova is another notable natural feature of the Danube Gorge: it is the largest cave there and more than 1,660 metres long. For those interested in the landscape and its geological dimensions, it provides another impressive landmark alongside the rock massifs. The yellow Cazane tulip can also be admired on the slopes of Ciucarul Mare in spring.
Hiking Trails from Dubova
The marked hiking trail to Ciucarul Mare is of moderate difficulty. The ascent is listed as taking about 1.5 to 2 hours. The trail to Ciucarul Mic takes about an hour and is easy to moderately difficult. The two options therefore differ both in their approximate walking times and their difficulty ratings. Both trails start in Dubova; check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
For a longer route, the Dubova–Eibenthal–Dubova loop is 47.8 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. It connects the Cazanele Dunării region with the Munții Almăjului and passes through Dubova and Eibenthal. The village of Eibenthal was founded by ethnic Czechs; after 1840, it developed into an important coal-mining centre. Churches, Monastery and Caves
The Orthodox church in Dubova is dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God (Nașterea Maicii Domnului). Another religious site is Mraconia Monastery on the left bank of the Danube, at the entrance to Cazanele Dunării and near Chipul lui Decebal. The monastery was originally built in the 15th century. As part of its refoundation, initiated after 1989, the foundation stone for the new church was laid in 1993.
Peștera Veterani, near Dubova, is accessible only by water. Boats can be rented in Dubova and Eșelnița; availability depends on the operators concerned. One historical interpretation links the cave to its use as a sacred site in Dacian times and to the worship of the god Zamolxis. A layer in Climente I Cave, in the Cazanele Mari area near Dubova, contained hearths and faunal remains—another archaeological point of interest in the area.
