Nehoiu lies on the upper course of the Buzău at an altitude of 450–500 metres, in the basin of the same name at the foot of the Munții Siriu and Podu Calului. This setting shapes the choice of focus for a trip: Nehoiu is a starting point for hikes toward several mountain areas, while activities on the Buzău offer a distinct perspective on the region. At the same time, the cathedral, wooden church and industrial complex of the Göetz sawmill tell different sides of the town’s history. When planning a stay, you can therefore distinguish between interests in mountain landscapes, river activities and cultural heritage.

Hiking, Water and a Cycling Route

Nehoiu is a starting point for hikes toward the Munții Siriu, Podu Calului and Penteleu. The Masivul Penteleu lies outside Nehoiu. There are marked hiking trails there, accessible to both beginners and experienced hikers. For specific hikes, check the trail conditions on site. This helps distinguish general guidance on mountain destinations from planning a particular hike.

On the water, the rafting and kayaking route on the Buzău is a separate option. It starts at the Nehoiașu hydroelectric power station near the confluence of the Bâsca and Buzău, heads toward Nehoiu and extends to the Valea Lupului area near Pătârlagele. The rafting route is of moderate difficulty, with fast and calm sections alternating. Conditions may vary seasonally, as may water levels and the availability of providers. So check in advance whether the activity can take place at your desired time.

For cyclists, the Nehoiu–Lacul Siriu–Gura Siriului–Nehoiu route starts in Nehoiu. Check local road conditions before setting off. This gives you a choice of different approaches to planning your day: hikes, river activities and a cycling route.

Cultural History Between Sacred Architecture and Industry

The Orthodox Cathedral of “Sfântul Mare Mucenic Gheorghe” in Nehoiu was built in the old Romanian style and features influences from the Brâncovenesc period. Another sacred building is the wooden church of “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” in Nehoiașu (Nehoiu town), a historic monument. A named architectural style and a historic wooden monument thus offer different ways to explore the town’s history.

Industrial history adds another facet: the historic industrial complex of the Göetz sawmill was built between 1908 and 1910 by the Austrian company Göetz to process timber from the upper Buzău Mountains. The sawmill thus brings together local industrial heritage and the mountain origins of the timber in a specific historical context.

Gaura Tătarilor near Mlăjet is also part of the town’s history: it is one of two rock settlements discovered within Nehoiu’s boundaries. As an archaeological site, it adds another perspective on the town’s history alongside its sacred buildings and industrial complex.

Transport History and Getting Your Bearings

Nehoiu’s former railway station building was inaugurated in 1909. The Buzău–Nehoiașu railway line connects the city of Buzău with places in the Buzău Valley. If you plan to travel by train, check current timetables separately.

The Centrul Național de Informare Turistică Nehoiu is located at 43b Calea Mihai Viteazu. If you plan to visit, confirm its opening hours beforehand.
