Chiojdu offers two distinct ways to explore: the marked trail to the Trovanții din Chiojdu and the architectural history of Casa cu Blazoane and Casa Codescu. These provide tangible focal points for planning your trip. For hiking, duration, difficulty and elevation gain are key considerations; the architectural history comes to life through the buildings’ dates, construction and a replica in Bucharest. This lets you decide whether outdoor activity or architectural history should be the focus of your stay.
Trail to the Trovanții din Chiojdu
From Bâsca Chiojdului, a marked trail leads to the Trovanții din Chiojdu after crossing the Bâsca River via a metal bridge. The hike takes 60 to 90 minutes and is rated easy to moderate. This time range helps you fit the trail into your day’s plans; the difficulty rating provides another useful guide for the hike.
The BA hiking trail connects the village of Chiojdu with the Trovanţii De Chiojdu and climbs the western slope of Chiojdu Hill. The trail is listed as having an elevation gain of about 300 m and taking about 1–1.5 hours. The time estimates—60 to 90 minutes and about 1–1.5 hours—are in the same range; the BA hiking trail also provides the approximate elevation gain as an additional planning detail. Trail markings and conditions may change. Check them before setting out.
Architectural history and architecture
Casa cu Blazoane is a historic monument of national importance, registered under code BZ-II-m-A-02383. The Izbășoi, free peasants with extensive landholdings, built the house in the mid-18th century; it was extended in 1823. Its architectural history thus brings together two phases and identifies the builders.
At Casa Codescu, the architectural focus is a massive foundation of river-stone masonry. The cellar and tool room are located in it, closely linking the materials with their use. A replica of Casa Codescu was built in 1936 at the “Dimitrie Gusti” Village Museum in Bucharest. The year refers to the construction of the replica and offers another perspective alongside the house itself: its representation in the museum.
Landscape and getting there
Pădurea cu tisă lies at the foot of the Munții Monteoru mountains and is a protected forest-type nature reserve. This adds a distinct landscape feature: the focus here is a protected woodland, while the hiking trails can be described by destination, duration and elevation gain.
To reach Chiojdu from Gura Bâscei, take the DN 10, then the DJ 102B towards Calvini, and continue on the DJ 102L towards Cătina and Chiojdu. The sequence of roads and places helps break the journey into stages. Roadworks or closures may temporarily change the route; check it shortly before departure.
